Only a handful of incumbents are ever primaried out and that is mostly in the House. Politicians know that. Why else do the likes of McCain and Graham, et al, shove stuff in the faces of the voters?
Most times, the only way to get rid of a senator, especially, is to vote in a replacement from the opposite party. Seldom will a party vote out their own incumbent.
