Border Wall: President Trump just had his bluff called — again
Washington Post ^ | 04/25/2017 | Aaron Blake

For the second time in two major legislative battles, the Trump White House has issued an ultimatum — only to back down.

In the health care debate, the president was going to force a House vote on the package and dare skeptical Republicans to vote against replacing Obamacare, before abandoning that plan in the face of defeat.

And now, in the government funding debate, he's backing off his previous demand that Congress approve funding for his border wall. As The Washington Post's Philip Rucker, Robert Costa and David Weigel report:

But with a Friday deadline looming to pass a new spending bill, the Trump administration projected confidence that a shutdown would be avoided. In the face of fierce Democratic opposition to funding the wall’s construction, White House officials signaled Monday that the president may be open to an agreement that includes money for border security if not specifically for a wall, with an emphasis on technology and border agents rather than a structure.

Trump showed even more flexibility Monday afternoon, telling conservative journalists in a private meeting that he was open to delaying funding for wall construction until September, a White House official confirmed.

The wall, of course, was the biggest applause line for Trump throughout his campaign — often taking the form of a call-and-response with his approving crowds. And given how divisive it is, inserting it into must-pass legislation like a government funding bill seemed to be the best way to get what Trump wants.

That's what the White House tried. Office of Management and Budget Chairman Mick Mulvaney said last week that any government-funding bill must include funding for the border wall. Throughout the weekend, top White House aides including Mulvaney suggested Trump might veto a spending bill that doesn't fund his border wall.

"Why does this wall have to be built immediately?"

It doesn't, but every day thousands of illegal immigrants are crossing the border, so the sooner the better. It is about 50 years too late already.

RE: Oh, look! Another FReeper surrender-monkey, hand-wringing parade from our usual weak-kneed weenies.

So, you are SURE that the Funding for the border WILL BE in this current spending proposal and if it isn’t Trump will veto it?

If not, it is not Freepers who are surrendering.

Perhaps the younger generation can take all this that has been going on and escalating in our country. Perhaps the younger generation does not see the dangerous changes. I had hope with our new President. I saw him as one who would not avoid a fight to save our nation... as one who would handle the democrats and stop our losing our country... as one who would remove the stench of obama.. as one who would clean out the corruption and we could once again breath fresh air and enjoy our freedoms we once had.

I thought I’d never use past tense when talking about Trump. I hesitate to use it even now... I voted for him.. I saw him as a force we so badly needed.. from the first day when he came down those stairs.

He has not lost me yet... but I’m thoroughly disgusted at the thought of him giving even half an inch to the dems! I heard even on Fox this evening (before I turned it off) the words “the republicans shutting down the government and blaming the democrats”. It just goes on and on.. there has been no let up on their rhetoric and the lies.. It wouldn’t be the repubs shutting it down.. where do they get that at!! The dems stop it all.. yes, they would be the ones who shut it down!

I want Trump to call them on every single item where the media is lying and the public is hearing it as such. I want Trump to do a Reagan and take it to the people.. every day if he has to.. and explain what is going on. He can’t just keep repeating “the wall will be built”... they just call that lying ... he has to say if he’s going to cave on this, this week. He has to explain to people like me, who is hearing a different tune from him.. I can’t count on any news to be honest.. it has to come from him.. and it’s not coming from him enough!

I want to know there are those things that seem to be on hold.. waiting... I want to see things changing.. and I don’t. I want him to do something about the fact they continue to investigate Trump.. and nothing on the clintons or the intelligence agencies... I am dead tired of seeing the evil.. the corruption... going unchecked and anything good is being cast aside... not reported.. and it’s been 100 days and the corrupt are still in Washington in our government. Comey is still there... if anything is being done... please tell us that the corrupt is being investigated.

And now obama is back.. and he makes me sick!!! the people who adore him make me sick!! he is such a con and such a liar.. that it offends me big time, to see people fall all over him! To see so many follow such evil, is disheartening. The world that revels in corruption ... our country that is filled with people who hate and spew it without reservations.

I come from a small town where we knew everyone and respected everyone. There was a commonality in those small towns. Today I live in a suburb of Atlanta.. have for half of my life.. and it’s different in so many ways. People don’t know one another.. there is no one to trust like we used to. It’s strange... and it’s almost scary to live today in a world of hate and people who lie like it’s second nature.. and use the worst language in their daily talking.

My son has 2 sons in sports and he sometimes coaches himself when needed. He speaks to parents of those boys on the team... and he is shocked at the language they use in just talking in general. He teaches his sons to not use those words... but the parents do and their sons do. It’s a losing battle to try to do right in any way, in any field.. be it politics or just living.. it’s permeated with things that didn’t used to be.

I had hoped Trump would have the battle gear to fight this corruption.. and there is corruption that goes so deep that it isn’t even allowed to be talked about.. so it’s avoided and the clintons will get by with what they’ve done because it’s just too sick to go there.. it’s easier to tell themselves they didn’t actually get into that kind of corruption anyway... but truth is they did. And Washington is filled with it... so it’s okay, since they all are into something that bad.. since it’s okay in society to live that way.

But it’s not okay with me... an older generation person who can’t get to the point where I can live with the crap that is being pushed and accepted today. God help us!

Of course the wall is going to be built, Ocare repealed, economy set in high gear, etc.

Trump always plays the long game, which means he knows when to attack and when to play some defense.

Get ready for 8 years of litigation—both in courts and Congress.

We elected a fighter, not a magician.

CA is trying to pass a Law that says that any Company who helps construct the Border Wall will be ineligible for any State Construction Project Contracts.

We are living in interesting times. State Governments Blackmailing Private Businesses involved in Legal Commerce that Liberal Politicians disagree with.

I was clearly talking about cutting spending, not taxes.
Cutting spending also does not impress a man with no job.

Yes, it is about perceptions. Right now the perception is that there are at least 4 factions of Republicans who cannot agree.
- Trump and his loyalists.
- Ryan and his loyalists.
- Freedom Caucus and
- RINOS on Ryan’s left who would not vote for Ryancare.

Currently the economy is growing. Come election time, if the economy is not in recession, the Republicans have the POTENTIAL to do well in 2018.

But elections depend a lot on the local candidate and local organization and not on what any of the 4 R factions in DC say or do.

Witness the GA 6th. Despite media attempts to say otherwise, the GA 6th has zero to do with what is happening in DC; zero to do with Trump. Republican Handel’s TV ads ran away from Trump more than Democrat Ossoff’s TV ads.

The GA 6th comes down to the fact that Ossoff is defining both himself and Handel. Both Handel and the Republican organizations (are they organizations if they are not organized?) are playing defense and are very defensive and are allowing Ossoff to set the theme and tempo of the campaign.

The same will be true in 2018. If in 2018 a Murdoch-type says something stupid about unborn babies or a Walsh-type Republican attacks a wounded warrior then they will lose.

If the local candidate and organization run a smart campaign then they will win.

Sorry that 4 months in every campaign promise hasn’t been filled.

It's not 4 months, Einstein. It's the last 6 years, when the GOP voted over 50 times to repeal obunghole care. Now, when they hold the House, Senate, AND White House, there's a problem? Lol. Just goes to show they never meant to repeal it in the first place, and they won't be repealing it now. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a total moron.

Between the investigations that went before and that are now, we all see the many crimes she has committed, and we've seen the evidence. So, if she was to be locked up, she'd be locked up. The fact that she is still walking free says she WON'T be locked up.

And yes, may our chains rest lightly, because we failed to do a damn thing about it. May our chains rest lightly, and may posterity forget we were countrymen.

“It’s not 4 months, Einstein. It’s the last 6 years,”

Wasn’t aware Trump has been in office 6 years, Einstein.

What? He hasn’t?

Well ok then.

You seriously, willfully, that blind?!?! The GOP voted over 50 times - 50 TIMES!!! - to repeal obunghole care over the last 6 years. Now, only now, all of a sudden, when the conditions are most favorable for them, they need to negotiate a deal? Seriously, you’re woefully and willfully ignorant if you think it’s actually going to be repealed.
