Fox News normally ranks #1 among cable news channels. But lately MSNBC's Rachel Maddow has been challenging Fox at 9 p.m., the centerpiece of the prime time schedule.
"The Rachel Maddow Show" surpassed "Tucker Carlson Tonight" in March among 25- to 54-year-old viewers, the demographic that determines advertising rates. Maddow was on track to win again in April. But on Monday night the cable news ratings race changed dramatically. Carlson moved from 9 p.m. to 8, replacing Bill O'Reilly, and Fox's 5 p.m. talk show "The Five" moved to 9.
Maddow may or may not benefit from the change. Regardless, executives all across television news have already taken notice of her recent wins. According to Nielsen data, Maddow also narrowly topped Fox's 8 p.m. hour last week, when Dana Perino and Greg Gutfeld filled in for O'Reilly.
Maddow's surge is being fueled partly by her day-in, day-out criticism of the Trump administration. There is an increased appetite for the liberal arguments she has been making for years.
"There's a reason Rachel is beating Fox and CNN," MSNBC president Phil Griffin told CNNMoney in an email. "She's a talented storyteller who's helping her audience cut through all the confusion coming out of Washington. She's connecting dots in ways no one else is."

Thanks for posting those numbers.
I think Tucker had a good night only because everyone tuned in to see his “debut”.
But as many have pointed out and posted - the real problem with Fox News is their Murdoch agenda.
Yes, it’s on its way according to reports. James Murdoch is planning a kitchen sink offensive, and is especially big on climate change.
He will be pushing science (from a fascist point of view) and no doubt bleeding the news corp of conservative pundits.
Rupert was a dunderhead to put them anywhere near FOX headquarters.
Oh I’m certain that their wives have been celebrating....BIG LEAGUE!
My dead cat can beat Shep's ratings.
Interesting observation - I never got the Beck thing, he always seemed ... needy - then loony
I haven't watched the Chantal Herbet look alike Mr/s Maddow - Glen's an addict is she one too? She seems meaner than Beck and less likely to cry I think she has bigger ... Anyhow these are probably things that will get her further then Beck.
Glad I'm not a shareholder.
I agree.
What? You weren't impressed with Tucker's brilliant and insightful interview of Caitlyn Jennings? Wow! That was white knuckle TV interviewing at its very best. I had one of the best naps of my life.
I loved him in his bow tie days, HATE him now, in his wimpy, limp wristed, having unknown faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar lefties open his show and allow them to babble on and on, whilst looking like a goggle-eyed, slack jawed, open mouthed blow fish. He NEVER used to be like this, it is an act, and when he was on EVERY SINGLE other FNC show, pushing his new time slot, he was a completely different person.
HIS SHOW STINKS ON ICE , HE IS A FRAUD, AND I AND MANY OTHERS WILL NOT WATCH IT!
Thnx.
So, let’s delve into the boo chit numbers:
FNC: 2,848,030 total viewers (582,547 in A25-54)
MSNBC: 1,801,447 total viewers (424,425 A25-54)
CNN: 944,570 total viewers (328,705 in A25-54)
***Fox out does both channels combined by 102,013 viewers***
8 p.m. ET
FNCs Tucker Carlson Tonight: 3,174,952 total viewers (636,124 in A25-54)
MSNBCs All in with Chris Hayes: 1,515,915 total viewers (369,842 in A25-54)
CNNs Anderson Cooper 360: 1,000,277 total viewers (351,646 in 25-54)
***Fox out does both channels combined by 658,760 viewers***
9 p.m. ET
FNCs The Five: 2,758,548 total viewers (568,064 in 25-54)
MSNBCs The Rachel Maddow Show: 2,161,898 total viewers (523,640 in A25-54)
CNNs The Lead with Jake Tapper: 881,724 total viewers (304,840 in A25-54)
***Here, the two channels combined out show Fox-The Five but, The Five has already played in the 2PM slot and many people have already watched, so it does more than admirably in this slot.***
10 p.m. ET
FNCs Hannity: 2,610,591 total viewers (543,452 in A25-54)
MSNBCs Last Word with Lawrence ODonnell: 1,726,528 total viewers (379,793 in A25-54)
CNN Town Hall With John Kasich: 951,710 total viewers (329,629 in 25-54)
***Yawn, same old ass kicking of two opponents by Fox***
***All this is without delving into the demographics but, when we do we find a show that has already played 6 hours earlier still beats Rachel Maddow in the A25-54 demo by 500,000 viewers.***
***Bottom line, her numbers aren’t something to crow about at all. She gets beat by a rerun...***
I don’t see how Rachel beats Carlson. He has 1 million more total viewers and over 100,000 in the 25-54 demo...
And I think he exposes their lies/hypocrisy without the itiotic screaming that marks Hannity and Oh-really...
And as for THE FIVE...just you wait...all of the dead snowflakes are going to just SWOON over twee GREGGY G. wearing his unicorn slippers! ( not kidding, he has a pair ! )
The Fox News ship took a torpedo and is listing.
By not refuting them/having them on at all, he allows idiots to think that these idiots are just GREAT, whilst sending viewers like me, off to watch TCM, PBS, of HGTV!
“Then they only have to compete against Mike Lindell and My Pillow; the commercial that runs 10,000 times per late night.”

LOL! Also on Chicago talk radio and probably many other talk radio stations throughout the country. :)
Mike Lindell must be doing very well to afford all of this advertising.
Typical CNN Fake news. Absolutely false

Fox News Wins Night One With Revamped Prime Time Lineup
his choice of guest (guess what I am) was the absolute worst. Who cares? His mental issue is sad and who is going to listen to his opinion when he doesn’t even know who he is or can’t accept who he is!
As evidenced by the Tucker interview with Brucey Jenner on his opening night/debut in the BOR spot.
Tucker = Andy Cohen light.
