North Korea Threatens to Sink a U.S. Carrier. Could They?
Popular Mechanics ^ | 4/24 | Kyle Mizokami

In the end, North Korea has an even bigger and more basic problem: It couldn't actually find a carrier if it wanted to. The country has shore-based radars, but those have limited range and a carrier can easily stay out of range. A carrier's aircraft and escorts will shoot down or sink any of North Korea's aircraft, drones, submarines, or surface ships before they gets with sensor range of the mother ship. While this isn't guaranteed in every scenario, North Korea's antiquated equipment is easily to detect.

I think we are GROSSLY overestimating the capabilities of the North Koreans. I think they are using the bluster to make us fear a "liberating ground invasion" of South Korea in order to gain food and the ability of Fat Boy to stay in power.

Either that, or he's truly insane and it's just a matter of time before they have deployable nuclear weapons. If they can't "find" an aircraft carrier at sea, what makes us believe they can launch a missile half way across the continent and actually hit something?

The Chinese a couple of years ago claimed to have a long range missile that was designed to sink a carrier. If the gave some to N Korea, who knows.

They would not be able to hit anything, but would you want a nuke to go off in the ocean near Japan?

What would be the EMP results, what would be the possible tsunami effects, etc.?

That is the real danger. Kim does not have to actually hit anything to cause a huge number of possible problems.

“North Korea Threatens to Sink a U.S. Carrier. Could They?”

Yes. Anything is possible. The NORKs use fishing boats for intel. Carriers are often spotted by fishermen in the open ocean. Plus there are literally hundreds of boats/ships in the area that get on the radio and tell all on the channel where the US war ships are.

Please remember that the Serbs shot down a stealth bomber using human assets to aid tracking. Spies and saboteurs are about so low tech can win a battle within a war.

Much agreed. The Norks are incapable of manufacturing anything else, how reliable are their arms? I've read on the rare occasions they "sell" medical supplies (hypodermic needles and gauze) to the Chicoms, they basically just burn it and are glad to get a rail car back.

It's one thing to have all 300 of your top scientists and engineers, working around the clock for weeks if not months to conduct a test under the most ideal conditions. Staging a tactical strike while under withering fire from our air and ocean forces is another thing all together.

Before we get too confident we should ask the 46 dead of the Cheonan.

Why would China give North Korea something that they could easily use against them?

Does anyone really think the little fat boy is willing to give up his billionaire a solute ruler lifestyle and all that comes with it? I don’t think so.

Agree, its dangerously naive to think that the NORKs have no idea where our warships are. They probably have myriad ways of gathering intelligence on us. A country that is rapidly developing a nuclear weapons capability should never be underestimated.

Remember, our navy under the traitor Obama, often let small Iranian boats harass them and get way too close. What are the chances that the USN still has idiotic ROEs and commanders putting our people in danger?

I'm not so worried about losses in a straight-up traditional battle. The US wins hands-down when its enemies wear uniforms and move in formation. Saddam made that mistake.

I worry more about asymmetric warfare. A suicide attack like the USS Cole seems unlikely, but how about anti-ship missiles launched from a fishing boat? NK has some modern submarines as well...

What can help us believe is the fact the Norks have satellites orbiting above the United States.

Maybe they could do it once, but after that the survivors of Chairman Dumpling’s utopia would be pineing for the good old days of tree bark soup.

You do not seriously believe that a President would murder millions of civilians because of a successful attack on a purely military target, do you?

And, sinking one or more carriers in the open ocean would result in ZERO collateral damage.
