My sister owns a half million dollar house, which is not a palace in Tampa. The taxes are about six thousand a year. The neighborhood receives nothing back for their yearly payments. The streets are cracked and broken. Oddly, a few of the lesser neighborhoods, where the city would be lucky to collect taxes at all, have been recently repaved.
There are probably more votes in the area where the streets were repaved!
We live north of there in Fl and the taxs seem about the same. Properties in FL are assessed at last sales price plus a small annual “inflation” increase. Tax rates unfortunately are not controlled by constitution in Fl for homeowners as in some other states. All in all with no income tax it works well. I am sure though some will try to overturn this someday.
I pay more than Warren on my single family house in the west....
“The neighborhood receives nothing back for their yearly payments.”
Nothing? How much of the property tax goes to local schools? Who are the county and state reps? Roads are usually funded jointly between local, county & state sources, but the paving priorities are usually set about the local level, by the county & state. At least here.
The lesser neighborhoods have more voters, I guess.
Here in NJ we have the highest property taxes in the nation (again), and little to show for it. So much revenue has to be used to pay people who retired decades ago...
