Before you launch a rocket, you need to count the moose.
Maritime Launch Services, the company that hopes to build a spaceport on a parcel of Nova Scotia land that juts into the ocean near Canso in Guysborough County, must first complete an environmental review including counting seasonal numbers of local flora and fauna before the province agrees to the project.
Weve hired a contractor to help us do the study, MLS president Steve Matier said Monday. We could conceivably complete that effort at the end of this year.
Its part of the process, and its understood. We had a fair sense of what we were getting into.
The nearby Sable Wind Farm, a county partnership with Nova Scotia Power, had to have a similar review before it was approved, Matier noted.
So we had a good sense of what to expect and we had a good sense of what had been done before, he said. For example, we knew there werent any moose seen when they did that four-year study. I think the nearest moose was 100 kilometres away.

Well......it is made of cheese you know.
It could be worse - it could have been doing an elf study before being able to get your permits. But - they are so hard to find - just the idea that they might be there could shut it down!

I hope my sister isn’t there....
Who’s going to volunteer their sister to ride along?
Moose On The Moon! It Would Make A Good Movie!
Nova Scotia is way to far north to be a good place to launch satellites. Closer to the equator, less energy is needed to get into orbit since it is possible to take advantage of the earth’s angular velocity.
These guys would only launch into polar orbit, which is covered by launches from other places...
Bullwinkle: "Oerrr well, I'm going to go to college to learn to count."
goose= a gaggle of geese
moose= a maggle of meese
Precisely. It was no accident that our space center is in Florida. And the Euros have theirs in French Guiana.
Those Nova Scotians need to get back to growing cucumbers in green houses.
Canso was selected by a team of American aerospace experts from 14 different candidate sites. It was chosen for its ideal access to a synchronous orbit, the areas low population density, its proximity to transportation hubs, and because of the provinces enthusiasm from the project.
—the launch pad is slated to deliver commercial satellites to low Earth orbit aboard Ukrainian-built rockets on a due south trajectory, and at a cost of $60 million per launch. The company would like to launch as many as eight rockets per year starting in 2022.

Before I self-named myself "Ace's Dad" my Navy call sign was "The ELF." I worked on the Navy's Project ELF, a submarine communications system built by Ronald Reagan.
Spaceport project hinges on moose count...
What doesn’t?
No where in the article does it state just how many Moose they have to have to get approval!
I suppose they could import some it they don’t have enough.
The name of the college where Bullwinkle matriculated was “Wassamatta U”.
