ALBANY — Thanks to the new state budget, electronic cigarette users can puff away without the tax man taking a drag.

Despite an alarming surge in e-cigarette use by high school students, state lawmakers — at the urging of the GOP-controlled Senate — rejected Gov. Cuomo’s plan to tax the liquid used in the devices and tighten restrictions on their use, advocates charged Monday.

Cuomo’s proposals were mysteriously left out of the budget approved by the Senate and Assembly over the weekend.

“The Senate Republicans picked big tobacco over public health,” said Bill Sherman, vice president for government relations at the American Cancer Society.

Do e-cigarettes cause cancer or any other health issues?

"The Senate Republicans picked big tobacco over public health,” said Bill Sherman ...

Except that there's, like, no tobacco involved. Other than that, Bill's spot-on.

[Do e-cigarettes cause cancer or any other health issues?]

Its never about that one way or the other. As usual, its about the fingers of government in your back pocket.

It is not yet known: the technology is too new to isolate cancer diagnoses.

I believe I read that there is a correlation with a higher incidence of pneumonia, due to inhalation of water vapor. Please note that I did NOT say, “E-cigarettes cause pneumonia!” but, “I believe I read that there is a correlation.”

Hate to bread it to Mr. Sherman, but these things are not ‘choosing big tobacco over public health’.

it’s a small - very small - step in getting the commies out of every nook and cranny of our lives.

Bravo to the Senate Republicans.

The Senate Republicans did not side with big tobacco.

They rejected the idiot Cuomo’s yet another tax on an already over-burdened citizenry.

There is tobacco involved. Where do you think the nicotine comes from?

They (Repubs) see that millions have stopped smoking cigarettes due to using e-cig liquid. I’m one of them.

I was assuming the nicotine was lab-synthesized.

The omission comes barely a month after the state Health Department reported that the percentage of high school students who used e-cigs nearly doubled, from 10.5% in 2014 to 20.6% in 2016.

Health officials also reported that the surge in battery-operated smokes came as the traditional smoking rate among high school students fell to a record low 4.3% in 2016 — down from 7.3% in 2014 and 27.1% in 2000.

OK, do they actually NOT see what is going on here?

Vaping is replacing cigarettes and therefor replacing tax revenue.

What they are not telling anyone in the scare articles is major insurance companies APPROVE vaping for smoking secession programs.

I know for a fact Cigna does approve vaping as a method for smoking secession.

Yes, high school students are merely trading traditional cigarettes for electronic ones, the overall 'smoking' rate isn't really even all that down.

Wonder how much longer before we get a full Truth propaganda ad campaign about electronic cigarettes.

If idiots like Bill Sherman, vice president for government relations at the American Cancer Society, think that politicization of the fight against cancer is going to advance their fundraising goals, they may be in for a costly surprise.
