President Trump Threatens To Cut Obamacare Subsidies
cnbc.com ^ | April 12, 2017

President Donald Trump has not given up on the holy grail of repealing Obamacare, and on Wednesday he revealed his next move, threatening to use health insurance subsidies as a weapon to get Democrats to negotiate on reform.

Trump said his administration may not have the legal authority to make cost-sharing reduction payments, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal. So-called CSR subsidies reduce out-of-pocket costs for low-income Affordable Care Act enrollees, but Republicans in Congress sued the Obama administration, saying they expenditures were not authorized under the ACA.

The president is clearly aware of the impact it would have to stop making CSR payments. After urging congressional leaders to pull the vote on the GOP health reform bill last month, Trump exclaimed that the best thing for Republicans is to "let Obamacare explode."

Perhaps President Trump should sit down with Senator Sanders and discuss an option of clinic-style medicine, with a sliding cost scale based on ability to pay. It would be for those who don't want or can't afford to be forced to purchase healthcare insurance not to their liking.

I could see a great demand from people who CHOOSE to purchase high-deductible policies for unexpected catastrophies. Clinic availability would (1) provide necessary care and (2) force the out-of-control medical, pharmaceutical, and insurance companies to get real about cost.

“Surest way for GOP to lose Congress in 2018 is cutting these subsidies”

Isn’t that the gorilla in the room? Gubment can’t take anything away from we citizens.

He could repeal it any day, but that is not what he wants. He wants to keep this horrible chain of slavery on the American tax payer.

So if he’s threatening to cut them if the Democrats don’t participate then that means that he’ll keep them at the same level if they do? So why repeal Obamacare?

congress is not being presented with a choice.

even trump is not being presented with a full choice. read the article. it says “Trump said his administration may not have the legal authority to make cost-sharing reduction payments, ...”

so the article’s author appears to take the point of view that trump should violate the law.

i note also that there does not appear to be a comments forum for the article. the only thing a reader can do besides read it is to share it. so the article seems to position itself as a form of propaganda.

what am i missing?

President Trump shows his cunningness. Looks like we can add master manipulator to the list of his proficiencies.

If he's trying to be cunning then he's misreading his opposition. Why should the Democrats give in to the threat? If Trump cuts subsidies then the tens of thousands of weeping people who formerly had healthcare but now do not will be blamed on him.

There is no incentive for the Democrats to participate. Having suffered from passing their own healthcare train wreck under Obama, the Democrats will be perfectly satisfied to sit back and watch the Republicans implement a train wreck of their own. Regardless of what happens, healthcare now belongs to the GOP.

Trump needs to get rid of all the exemptions that Obama passed out to his buddies. Congress shouldnalso lose its exemption.

He shouldn’t THREATEN to cut it, he should STATE that it will no longer be paid.

Just not going to happen. 1. they don't actually want to repeal it. That is evident in the fact that, from 2010 - 2016, they voted for complete repeal over 50 times. Now, all of a sudden, when we are in the BEST position to repeal it, we haven't done so. This should be a very easy thing to do, based on 2010 - 2016.

2. If the subsidies were cut, the insurance companies would IMMEDIATELY file lawsuit.

Trump WILL NOT get my vote in 2020 (nor will any R in 2018) if they do not repeal obunghole care IN FULL within the next year.

Republicans need to hold the line. Above all else, hold the line!

Obamacare was passed without a single Republican vote, and considerable subterfuge (cornhusker kickback, al franken fraudulent election, not to mention an illegal alien president). To lend any support to Obamacare negates all of the honest work of holding the line that Republicans have done since 2010.

Any breach of that line by any republican will be viewed by republican voters as complicit with all of that dishonesty.

Republicans can and should simply let obamacare die on the vine. this type of article will be typical of the type of propaganda thrown up by Democrats in their own defense of passing a program that was designed from the outset to fail.

Remember, Obamacare was sold by Democrats on the premise that it was the be all and end all of health insurance bills. If it starts to fail, let the Democrats propose a solution. Why should the burden of fixing Obamacare fall upon Republicans?

Republicans can swoop in with some kind of Obamacare replacement once its failure becomes apparent to all. Providence knows, the US public is so stupid that Republicans feel compelled to wait until the obvious is upon them.

Simply take away Congress’ exemption! And that’s not negotiable!

There is no analysis in the article about who is to blame for the Obamacare implosion.

According to the article, the Obamacare implosion is a given.

This has to be some kind of gigantic journalistic fallacy.

Implosions of huge government plans just don’t happen. Someone in the government goofed.

The honest truth is that Obamacare is a government made train wreck in slow motion. When the train wreck occurs, all Republicans need to do is to play endlessly the videos of Democrats promising manna from heaven if Obamacare was passed.

Manna from heaven? train wreck in slow motion!

Art of the Deal. His threat has multiple targets for different reasons all designed for positive outcomes. If he pulls the subsidies his own without warning the media & GOPe will bark about him being a loose cannon who’s mad because he isn’t getting his way.

With the threat of pulling the subsidies the RATs on the left & the right are forced to deal with the possibilities they will risk their seats in the 2018 in Red states where Trump did very well. President Trump is operating on a whole ‘nether level than anyone who’s occupied the White House in my 56 years of life on this round ball of dirt.

the failure of obamacare needs to be shoved down democrat congresscritters’ throats, starting now.

this would be easy enough to do. just get a pac together and start running videos of democrats voicing their support for obamacare.

start the ad campaign kickoff in, oh, maybe Knoxville, Tennessee, which is the first touchdown for the Obamacare death spiral.
