Yes, for the short term, but the fact is that China is not NOW the China of 1949. I do not believe they would come to the aid of North Korea if South Korea invaded and then amalgamated the two nations.It would usher in a peace unknown since 1950 when the Korean war began, and has never actually ended.
This problem of North Korea needs a solution once and for all, the Norkies have been helping both Syria and Iran with nuclear technology, a triumvirate of butchery and international terror.

What happens depends on China’s participation, especially in providing UN peace keeping troops in the aftermath.But N Korea and S. Korea can be re-unified. It can happen and be over in just a few days if everything went as planned.

So true, the NORK brass must have superhuman survival skills. They have risen to the top applying their skills with stealth. I doubt they trust each other, for to show weakness to a peer is loss of power, maybe life.
The intelligence question, hard to solve maybe, might be if internal alliances within the military brass exist, for a small group working together, having their finger on all the buttons would be the most dangerous element.

i think you may have your generals confused. The US commander in Korea during the Ford Administration was this guy.
Stilwell did have an incident during his command tour, and it was a bad one. He lost some guys when the North Koreans came across while some troops were trimming a tree.

Yes, I wasn’t specific enough, but that was the idea. Any of our coasts, really. Freighter and a skud is all it takes.
However, the converse is opposite. South Koreans Christians have heaped up decades of prayer for their NK kins people. They speak the same language, share the same heritage from the prior generations. When the time comes, the South Koreans will be the missionaries of peace and plenty for those in the North.
I was once in an intense prayer session for those around the world. When I got to the point of praying for North Korea, it was like my spirit moved to another place, and suddenly I realized my feeble prayers were nothing compared to the millions of prayers daily being uttered in Korean by Koreans for Koreans in North Korea. Those prayers are being stored up in heaven. I expect with the leadership we are seeing this very week, the sudden moment we have been waiting for since Truman and MacArthur first had their standoff will have its break through.
Our recent prayer history, as a nation has its roots in Bill Clinton and Barack Obama times in office.
Our prayers brought us the ultimate wild-card - DJT.
We are still just in the first 100 days. American History, like never before, is being written right before our eyes.
The prayers for the North Koreans will be answered in a biblical fashion. However it happens, we will not see it coming. The NORKs will not see it coming.

The USA will not attack first—Only Goad the fat Dictator into making a foolish mistake. Then, use it to end him. OR goad the Chinese into doing the dirty work for us. A coup of the North Korean Military to unseat the little monster. And a new day—a capitalist Day—for North Korea. More trade with south and a new place on the world stage.
We’re not going to take down the NORKS, China will do it for us. As the Russians are in Syria, China realizes that if they do not do something about Baby Kim, there is a distinct possibility that any regime change NOT under their control could lead to a unified peninsula.
Interesting story - I recently read the book, The Generals, by Thomas E Ricks; it’s a fascinating look at leadership, both good and bad, from WWI to present day (up until when the book was written in 2012). It’s a master class on strategy, communication with civilian leadership, replacing military commanders when necessary, etc. Towards the end of the book, the author mentions two names repeatedly: H.R. McMaster and Matthis.
McMaster literally wrote the book on what when wrong in Vietnam, and Matthis is known to lead from out in front.
When I see photos of the President in the Situation Room with his advisers, Matthis and McMaster are usually present, and I feel very reassured that neither will let the US get bogged down in an extended conflict or make rash decisions.
You left out a most important calculation; one that is paramount in my opinion.
The ROK military. They’re the ones who will do most of the ground-pounding; not the US Army and Marines.
They can and WILL fight, and fight hard.
They also have the advantage of our technology improvements—and their own, 4 million reserve troops, and the will and courage to defend their own homeland, especially with their backs against the wall and their capital in the crosshairs.
During Vietnam the ROK army were some of the best troops on Earth.
Now they are also high-tech.
They are being left out of all this talk, and that makes me curious as to what is going on with them. If they publically mobilize their huge reserves, expect all Hell to break out.
Right guy, I was thinking he got fired for it. Guess I was wrong... 40+ year memory.. remember the fuss over his statement. I was sitting on Guam at the time, and the 8AF staff was making routine visits to Korea for planning purposes.
Why do the uninformed speculate?
I don’t have any faith an air force can win a war.
It can make it possible for ground forces to win a war, but an air force can’t win a war by itself. At least not without resorting to nukes.
And North Korea has some of the deepest, most sophisticated bunkers in the world, literally nuke proof.
Not to mention huge amounts of fortified artillery in range of Seoul.
At best, this will be messy.
My fondest hope is that it will be messy for the People’s Liberation Army, not for the US and South Korean armed forces.
Why should we be the ones to do it? He’s in China’s backyard and just across the way from Japan and a dozen other countries. US troops shouldn’t have to put their lives on the line for every single world cause.
Or then we might just buy off China and let them handle it.
