CMP goes through them and grades the condition. The price is determined by the condition but there is still a certain amount of risk/luck.
I bought a CMP M1 Garand about 3 years ago, it took many months for it to ship but totally worth it. Mine is muzzle and throat erosion 2, it’s a H&R M1 with a Springfield bolt made in 1954 and GI wood. Really love the gun.

I sure wouldn’t mind having another. I turned my first into a $1,000 hangar queen. It would be nice to have a plain shooter.
