Spain said today it had stepped up border controls with Gibraltar under a scheduled move by the EUs Schengen zone.
The announcement comes amid rising friction over the British territory caused by Brexit.
The interior ministry said it had intensified controls at the crossing point to Gibraltar, a rocky outcrop in Spains southern tip, in line with rules introduced on Friday for boosting security on the Schengen perimeter. [ ]
The new rules coincide with a flare-up of tensions surrounding the rocky outcrop, which Spain ceded to Britain in 1713 but wants back.
The European Union, reacting to Britains decision to trigger the process for leaving the EU, last month set out draft guidelines stipulating Spain must have a say over whether any post-Brexit trade deal is extended to Gibraltar.

Bah. The Spanish have nursed that grudge long before Brexit. I recall several times sitting in an excessively long line to enter Gibraltar in the late 90s that was intentionally made long/slow by the Spanish authorities just as a way to thumb their noses at the Brits. And this was well before Brexit, when everyone was one big happy union of client states to Brussels.
Spain ceded it to Britain in 1713 and now they want it back? Heck, it was just in 1954 that Khrushchev gave Crimea to Ukraine.
