Who could have guessed that “diverse” characters would tank Marvel’s sales?

After a few ciggies the smoking monkeys face was all black! LOL and now that would be so racist.

Took all summer to get these things via USPS

Found out later in life (12) you could get a fishing pole, a 22 rifle or knife for cash on the barrel head at Western auto.
Lord I miss my childhood

Same here.
popular science was more my thing, popular mechanics and although no one taught me hunting, ‘field and stream’

Hal Jordan is always the Green Lantern to me. Same with Barry Allen as the Flash.

Marvel is unreadable crap. Basically Marvel let writers do anything they wanted without any editorial oversight and decades of cannon have been just tossed aside... Much like DC did with the new 52...

Unlike DC though, marvel just keeps plowing forward with it... DC at least wised up and ended that nonsense with Rebirth.

We didn’t have any money (or surrogate parental interest in) stuff like that, but the ads in comic books always caught my eye. I wanted the Polaris missile submarine, as I was kind of into submarines then.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but I think it was made out of cardboard, and wouldn't have lasted long in the water.

Making characters that have been heterosexual for decades gay, and changing them from young white males to black males, hispanic males, or women does not interest the only target demographic marvel comics has.

I think they saw that the medium was dying, but assumed that it was a matter of demographics.

They thought that the growing non-White teenage population would be as into graphic novels as White kids were 50 years ago (and that the White guys wouldn't lose interest).

They didn't understand that there are other ways of telling stories and graphic novels aren't the most exciting. Kids might want to put their $10 towards a video game that gives them more possibilities, rather than throw it away on a graphic novel.

Also, the superhero market was getting saturated enough as it was, without introducing new characters and remaking the old ones. Genre "diversity" might have been a better strategy than ethnic or gender "diversity."

Japanese comics are doing fine (I think) because they aren't all recycling the same tired superhero plots and characters, but embrace other storytelling traditions.

It was my bubble when I was maybe five. I guess you think I still am. That hasn’t been true in many decades.
