WASHINGTON (AP) The Senate is headed for a tense showdown over President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee that could have far-reaching consequences for Congress, the high court and the nation.
Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republicans are determined to confirm Judge Neil Gorsuch within the week. But to do so, they will likely have to override Democratic objections and unilaterally change Senate rules so that Gorsuch can be confirmed with a simple majority in the 100-seat chamber, instead of the 60-voter threshold.
Though it may seem arcane, the approach is known on Capitol Hill as the "nuclear option," because it strikes at the heart of the Senate's traditions of bipartisanship and collegiality.

Well, here's an old song I like.
Harry Reid did the nuclear option for lower court judges, and other pres. nominees needing Senate approval.
If it comes to the nuclear option for the Supreme Court nominees, they will just be finishing the job Harry Reid and Democrats started. How can Democrats complain about this, when they did the nuclear option when it suited their partisan political purposes???
Or are they saying that anything, any technique or any action, which benefits the liberals, is ok when done, but Republicans aren’t allowed to do so when the GOP is in charge????
Tim Kaine said before the election that the Democrats would use the nuclear option if necessary to confirm Hillary’s choices for the Supreme Court. What’s sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
The best thing to do is either abolish the filibuster entirely, or require that it be conducted the way it was 50 years ago. Senators must continually speak, or the filibuster ends. Let’s see who has the endurance.
SCOTUS has nothing to say about Senate rules.
I agree. Few people understand how the filibuster has been changed and rigged to serve as a partisan tool instead of a roadblock to advance new legislation that would incite voter anger.
When it comets the supremes the GOP played fair with the rats.
F Bipartisanship!
And these two Asspress pinheads seemed to forget all about Old Harry.
Old fashioned talk-till-you-drop, and body search any filibustering Senator to see if he is wearing a “motorman’s friend”.
We have a winner going back 50 years would do it. I think Jimmy Stewart would agree.
The fear that setting the precedent on Scotus will allow the libs to use it is silly. Does anyone believe they won’t use it if they regain the senate?
McConnell should employ the nuclear option AND do away with the sissy, make-believe fillibuster in one fell swoop.
Senators today don’t actually have to fillibuster - they just have to say that they are declaring a fillibuster!
What a bunch of overpaid Snowflakes!
Reid nuked the filibuster as a good servant of the Liberal Messiah without any regard to what harm it could inflict on the Senate Democrats in the future. Welcome to the future, Senate Democrats. Thanks Harry!
Three things that are highly overrated: pregnancy self employment and bipartisan politics.
Nuke it!
Don’t you remember when the Reps had 40+ votes and held filibusters on Sotomayor, Kagan, Breyer and Ruth Buzzi?? That’s because they never happened, they were ushered through with almost no controversy even though Ruth Buzzi was GC to the ACLU and Kagan and S-mayor were as radical as they come.
“The word ‘bipartisan’ means some larger-than-usual deception is being carried out.” - George Carlin
Yes bipartisan implies compromise. Compromise means you don’t get what you want.
Forget bipartisan. We won. The big dog eats.
What a sad commentary on a matter which, though taking place at the time of one voted in the Year 2017, may limit or expand the liberty of millions for decades to come.
Which of these voting Senators is committed to the sacred oath they took to "protect and defend the Constitution" by which they serve?
Or, are they simply "sides" in a contest of wills about whether the R's or the D's will prevail?
Matters of State, when determining who will interpret the laws they write, should not be perceived by those like Corker as "sides."
Just NUKE EM and get it over with!! Why are we waiting around? NUKE EM!! AND KEEP NUKEing em!!
