The BBC has learned that US officials "verified" a key claim in a report about Kremlin involvement in Donald Trump's election - that a Russian diplomat in Washington was in fact a spy.
So far, no single piece of evidence has been made public proving that the Trump campaign joined with Russia to steal the US presidency - nothing.
But the FBI Director, James Comey, told a hushed committee room in Congress last week that this is precisely what his agents are investigating.
Stop to let that thought reverberate for a moment.
"Investigation is not proof," said the president's spokesman.
Trump's supporters are entitled to ask why - with the FBI's powers to subpoena witnesses and threaten charges of obstructing justice - nothing damning has emerged.
Perhaps there is nothing to find. But some former senior officials say it is because of failings in the inquiry, of which more later.
The roadmap for the investigation, publicly acknowledged now for the first time, comes from Christopher Steele, once of Britain's secret intelligence service MI6.
He wrote a series of reports for political opponents of Donald Trump about Trump and Russia.

We need to add the two years Nixon gave up to the Trump term.
“that a Russian diplomat in Washington was in fact a spy.”

WOW! That is truly impressive counter-intelligence work!
HOLD THE PRESS - Every Russian diplomat is a spy. Always was, always will be. Is this supposed to be a surprise?
The real news would be a Russian diplomat that isn’t one!
The United States can meddle in the affairs of every sovereign nation on the planet and “interfere” with their elections when ever they want but maybe somewhere some Russian might have maybe done something that maybe could have caused a person to not vote for Hillary because 100% accurate information was released online is some how a national emergency.
It was clear that the “deep state” was itching for a war with Russia before the election (cold or otherwise). I think beating the war drums against Russia is more important than smearing Trump (which they know won’t stick).
no evidence Trump joined with Russia to steal the election
what slop passes nowadays for journalism
so now Russia determines who gets elected?
how they gonna do that when SorozNazi and his IslamoNazi pals from the Arabian peninsula...have already purchased and control the DNC?
(and why no ‘investigation’ of THEM!?????)
Yes, they are dopes, but, we pay their salary, so what are we?
And John McCain was involved in this, remember he paid that guy from Canada to go over there and meet with this M16 Steele guy and paid him for that dossier and when he got it, McCain said he gave it to the FBI because he thought that was the right thing to do and they told him they already had it...
We need McCain investigated for a lot of reasons folks!!!
Wow, glad to see that the BBC lib arts majors are no smarter than our marshmallows.
Good show there, BBC, tell us some more stuff we didn’t know.
This article is a Duh!. Every diplomat is a spy of sort and history is full of instances where opposition parties have met with diplomats during a campaign.
A successful argument can be made that a President-elect and his transition teams are the de-facto government and the lame-Duck president is a mere occupants ensuring the day to day operation of the U.S — a mere oversight role.
What else could he have been?
What are the odds, really, that he wasn't (in one way or another) a spy?
A diplomat who is actually a spy? This may be the first time in history. Breaking news!
Wait! What? A diplomat might be a spy? Come on. That’s just crazy talk. It never happens! Except on days that end with “y”
It reads like a gossip column.
Anybody working at the embassy is KGB duh
I have tears in my eyes. Someone needs to get the Robert P Hanssen award for speedy unmasking of a spy.
What about President Trump might have used Russian dressing on a salad?
Reminiscent of the Mark Twain spin: "And then there is the story of the lawyer who had his hands in his own pockets . . ."
Everyone in Silicon Valley knows the Russian billionaire technology investor Yuri Milner - so are they all implicated in this scheme?
