Wounded Ryan faces new battle
The Hill ^ | 03/28/2017 | Scott Wong

A wounded Paul Ryan is facing another potential crisis over the next month.

The Speaker, who saw his years-long effort to repeal ObamaCare collapse last week after a rebellion on the right, must come up with a plan to fund the federal government and avert a shutdown.

The Wisconsin Republican will face many of the same tricky intraparty dynamics as he tries to keep the government running.

Funding expires in about a month, on April 28, but the House is taking a two-week recess in mid-April, leaving negotiators just a few legislative work weeks to reach a deal.

The stakes are extremely high for the GOP. A government shutdown, similar to the one orchestrated by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and his House allies in 2013, would confirm what many Democrats and political pundits are already saying: Republicans, despite controlling the White House and both chambers of Congress, simply can't govern.

Two of the biggest hurdles to keeping the government's lights on are conservatives' insistence that the spending package include billions for President Trump's border wall and that it block all federal dollars for Planned Parenthood.

Trump has requested $1.5 billion in supplemental funding for what he's called his "big, beautiful wall," plus another $2.6 billion in his 2018 budget request.

But Senate Democrats have threatened to filibuster the must-pass spending bill if it includes money for a wall, sparking a shutdown standoff over one of the president's chief campaign promises. On top of that, some Republicans from border states -- including Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn (Texas), Armed Services Chairman John McCain (Ariz.) and Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.) -- are highly skeptical of Trump's wall, citing concerns about the price tag and private-property rights.

Cancel the two-week recess in mid-April until it passes.

Not every conservative is a Republican. Not every Republican is a conservative. This is a critical lesson too many people on the Right never seem to learn.

There is a broad spectrum of viewpoints on the Right from centrist all the way to ultra Right, with many points in between. This is why we struggle to reach consensus on many issues. In contrast, the Left finds it easy to reach consensus because they are almost uniformly way far Left. Their spectrum of viewpoints is far more narrow.

We on the Right somehow need to work together for the common good. And yes, that means learning to compromise to get Reagan's 80% and live to fight another day for the remaining 20%.

Beautifully stated and so true. I wish I knew the answer to dilemma of convincing people who don’t want to compromise that it’s the only way to succeed. Sigh.

Trump betrayed America.

Your words are false poison. You are working for the adversary now, whatever excuses you make for yourself.

The "Missouri Compromise" worked out well, didn't it.

“Consensus: “The process of abandoning all beliefs, principles, values, and policies in search of something in which no one believes, but to which no one objects; the process of avoiding the very issues that have to be solved, merely because you cannot get agreement on the way ahead. What great cause would have been fought and won under the banner: ‘I stand for consensus?” ― Margaret Thatcher

If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing. - Margaret Thatcher

So many "Kasich Republicans" on this board these days.

Evidently if one desires to be admitted to the Republican Party nowadays, one must leave one's testicles, along with one's principles, at the door.

If being a mealy-mouth "conservative" in the mold of a John Kasich, a Paul Ryan, or a Jeb! is what is required to be a member in good standing of the GOP, I want nothing to do with "conservatism." Or the GOP.

Were you for slavery, as long as the slaves have black skin, or were you for abolition and freeing the slaves through federal intervention ?

That is a great idea.

If we had an actual leader, like Gingrich was, or O'Neill for the dems or even Pelosi who, like it or not, got things DONE---if we had a real leader that would be how he would do it.

Take them by the ears and sit them down until the work is done!

“If Republicans squander what they have been given this year, they will never recover.”

Yup. It’s like hiring a plumber who doesn’t show up, then when he does finally admits he can’t do the job.

I voted straight GOP ticket in 2014. Then just a few Republicans this past November, one in particular.
We’ve listened for years while the Grand Old Party complained they would if they could, but darn it—they just didn’t have the numbers.
If it is so affected by Stockholm syndrome after tugging its forelock to `rats for years, if the GOP isn’t comfortable using power to accomplish our agenda, to turn back `rat statism, if it has become that old and ossified—as you say, after the next election they may not just be a minority. They will go the way of the Whigs.

Why continue to pretend to have two parties if they are actually pretty much agreed on issues and our `wild card’ President Trump is stymied by their intransigence. If the swamp can’t be drained because our guys are some of the worst critters in it ....

There is a lot of murmuring, envy, and rebellion in the air and God is not the author of it.

And yet you hold the tripe you post blameless.

You introduced the Missouri Compromise into evidence. Since you were against the compromise, were you for continuing slavery throughout the nation to protect private property or for using the federal government throughout the states ?

Yes, I pray without ceasing God will continue His grace and mercy to my nation and thank Him for this miracle. I do understand what happened afterward to the people who left Egypt that died in the wilderness without entering the promised land.

But also communists are as communists do. Paul Ryan took 7 years to write RyanCare which is a socialist /communist bill so that proves Ryan is a communist and a liar.

The lie is that these guys write any legislation at all, heck they don't even read it. Someone proposed a one sentence repeal doubt if he wrote that either.

That is one of Reagan's worst statements ever and it is used by conservatives to justify being a traitor to the Republic.

OK how about 20%,

Easy enough just become a democrat, they don't compromise even if they lose, because they will be back wit the same deal eventually and they will win.

Don’t be foolish. Thatcher was talking about compromising with the Left, not among members of her own governing coalition. No one is asking you or anyone else to abandon principles. However, you...and people who think like you...need to realize that others have principles too, but may hold theirs in a different priority order than you do. There isn’t a single pure adult human being on the planet, including you, principles notwithstanding. The Left is my enemy. Fellow conservatives and Republicans are not. When I have areas of disagreement with my friends, I work to find common ground. To do otherwise is self-destructive. So now it seems the Freedom Caucus regrets what happened and they are looking for ways to resurrect the Ryan bill while putting a full repeal on the House floor for a vote. In other words, they are seeking a compromise.

Then one might consider not building a new Golden Calf.

We all know why we voted for President Trump and what he is delivering now is not it. You need to recognize that he was saved by the Freedom Caucus whether you like it or not. We do not want a one term president

The Democrats and One World Order Republicans do not want Trump to be successful, most of them hope he is impeached, jailed or assassinated.

As I said, the Left has a far more narrow spectrum of viewpoints in their body politic than those of us on the Right. So it’s easier for them to stick together. We have a very broad spectrum of viewpoints, from centrists all the way to ultra Right. In order for us to defeat our true enemy, the Left, we must find common ground among ourselves. If we can’t, then all is lost.
