THE GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK

GEORGE GERSHWIN

LADY, BE GOOD!

This 1924 show was the first time that George and Ira Gershwin teamed to write an entire show that was not a revue. Fred and Adele Astaire, the brother and sister dance team, were the stars. It ran for years in New York and then in London.

FRED & ADELE ASTAIRE: “FASCINATING RHYTHM”

The trick to this song is figuring out the time signature. This was to be one of the most successful tunes that Gershwin ever wrote.

Fred had visited George in his cubicle in Tin Pan Alley back in 1916 when they were both teenagers with big dreams. Fred wanted a vaudeville number, and they swore to work together some day. Now, eight years later, they had their chance. That’s George on piano working it brilliantly in E-flat.

Fred & Adele Astaire: “Fascinating Rhythm”
