Trump delivers ultimatum to House GOP: Pass health-care measure on Friday or he’ll move on

President Trump delivered an ultimatum to House Republicans on Thursday night: Vote to approve the measure to overhaul the nation’s health-care system on the House floor Friday, or reject it and the president will move on to his other legislative priorities.

The president signaled that the time for negotiations was over with rank-and-file Republicans who were meeting late at night on Capitol Hill to try to find common ground on the embattled package crafted by House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.).

The move was a high-risk gamble for the president and speaker, who have both invested significant political capital in passing legislation that would rewrite the 2010 Affordable Care Act. For Trump, who campaigned as a skilled negotiator capable of forging a good deal on behalf of Americans, it could either vindicate or undercut one of his signature claims. If the measure fails, it would mean that Obamacare — something that congressional Republicans have railed against for seven years — would remain in place.

“Disastrous #Obamacare has led to higher costs & fewer options. It will only continue to get worse! We must #RepealANDReplace. #PassTheBill,” Trump tweeted from his official White House account as the meeting was wrapping up Thursday night.

I agree with with Trump too. I have a problem with Ryan’s skills, that’s all. Skills are required in his position. I question his skills.

The House passed repeal before. The House has voted 54 times in four years on Obamacare.

That's meaningless. They only passed it before because they knew it wouldn't become law. They'd never have to suffer the consequences of an outraged populace.

At every rally, every interview and even tonight.

Repeal and replace. Lower Premiums. No forced government mandates.

Ryan never listens.

This bill is no repeal bill and raises premiums.

The FCaucus listens to Trump, supports his agenda top to bottom.

You are right. Trump will walk away from a bad deal if it can’t be turned into a good deal. I don’t blame him.

Actually they are, when negotiating you let the other side know, your best offer is on the table take it or leave it, especially if you feel they are jerking you around and have no intention of following through.

It forces them to poop or get off the pot.

If the other side doesn’t believe you are willing to walk away you have absolutely no leverage. Politicians are too stupid to realize this, the minute you are unwilling to walk away and the other side knows it, you lose all leverage.

Problem is politicians are too stupid to realize, Trump will absolutely walk away.

Stop blaming this on Ryan.

I blame Ryan for starting with such a ridiculous bill, knowing full well what is really needed.

Trump wants this bill too. I agree with Trump.

Trump has said he wants a good bill, and so do many people who voted for him.

As I've said since the beginning: there was zero chance that this bill would pass as introduced. Therefore, it was going to be changed. And those changes need to meet with the approval of the House Freedom Caucus, not to mention the voters who were promised repeal & replace.

Paul Ryan is the most powerful man in the Legislative branch of the federal government. The President doesn't write laws. He just says what he would like them to contain. If this law doesn't contain what was broadly outlined during the campaign, then the legislator who introduced it is not—in the face of urgent need—meeting his duty to be responsive to the people who put him in charge of that branch of government.

100% right, dood.

Look it up. He’s been Speaker less than 2 yrs. He didn’t want the job. NO ONE ELSE IN THE GOP HOUSE CAUCUS COULD GET A MAJORITY. It was so extreme there was talk of making a non member Speaker.

He took the job because there was no one else.

Then the past week or two the Koch money started to flow, reassuring the 12% wackos that even if the GOP cuts them off, they’ll get campaigns funded — because of course the Koch guys are never Trump types.

Ryan had it right from day 1. You will never get this close. This is it.

Y’all wackos wanted him to waste time sending a bill to the Senate that could never get 60 votes. Why? To make you feel good? What other rationale could there be if it can’t get 60?

Morons.

Nope sorry, Here you go.
1) line one, repeal the bill
2) put in preexist, parents til you are 99 or whatever.
3) everything else you want
4) attach to HHS budget bill, budget bills can’t be filibustered.
Case solved. repeal and replace, Very simple. Everyone happy.
Solution 2.
1) repeal obamacare, effective in 6 or 8 or whatever months.
2) then you have 6 months for second bill to put in everything you want, so no one goes without, everyone gets to keep their promise.
3) pass repeal bill as rider to HHS bill, filibuster no problem.
Case solved, repeal and replace, Very simple Everyone happy.
Solution 3
1) Purchase Turtle a set of balls, and reverse the filibuster for only this one bill.
2) Pass the repeal and Separate replace bill.
3) Put filibuster back in place. You know the dems would do it.
Case solved, repeal and replace, Very simple Everyone happy.

This is so much simpler than helping my 4th grader with her sciene homework tonight.

Point is republican leadership DOES NOT WANT REPEAL and Trump doesn’t know what is going on. He’s a cool guy and all that, but completely clueless as to Ryan and how this healthcare garbage works. He will just say it is great no matter what the bill reads.

We don’t need the government in our health care.

Maybe not, but you need the Congress critters to uncouple it.

If Trump has no faith in Ryan, he will say so. He’s not exactly timid in expressing his opinions, you know.

BTW, you do know that the GOP consists of several factions. And that those factions disagree. And none of those factions has a majority. Therefore, when they select their leaders, they caucus. And they select a leader that’s acceptable to all the factions. So we always end up with compromise candidates. That’s just the way it is.

I agree with the second sentence, completely. And in a sense, that's another way of saying the prior votes were "meaningless" or "hollow." But those votes were also a follow through on a "promise" that we now see was hollow too. As for whether or not the politicians will see consequences, I'm sure they hope that is true. The trick is to get your piece of the action before the whole house of cards collapses.

We’re not losing the House or Senate. 10 Dem Senators in red states and a mid-term in which Dem self-id has been trending down since the election while Rep self-id has been trending up. Add to that the fact that AS SOON as Gorsuch is in, the battle for national voter roll verification and voter ID will begin. It will go to the Supreme Court, and will go 5-4 for national voter ID.
