Welfare reform has been a high priority for Republicans and conservatives for many years, and now that President Donald Trump is in the White House, the possibility of such reform is finally feasible.
In what was quite possibly the opening salvo on welfare leeches, Trump was ready to sign a bill passed by Congress that would allow states to perform drug tests on those applying for unemployment benefits, WITI reported.
Under President Barack Obama, states werent allowed to test applicants for drugs unless they were applying for a job that already had mandatory drug testing. However, theres a new sheriff in town and hes backed by a Republican-controlled Congress that, while far from perfect, is at least more likely to pass common-sense legislation like this than any legislative body under the control of people like former House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

“How about random drug testing for government workers?”
I had to do that because of clearances. Pain in the ass, but necessary.
How about University Professors?
“How about University Professors?”
Absolutely, and publish the results.
How about random drug testing for ALL government workers.....including elected officials?
They aren’t tested? They doesn’t make sense. If anyone needs to be sober and drug free, it’s them.
Are there any American jobs in Vietnam?
It's been professionally cultivated for at least a generation to optimize the potency and intoxicating effects that make the Maui Wowie of the 1970s look like tea leaves
The latest strains of cannabis are increasingly strong, serious and potentially dangerous drugs
Can’t take one who starts a post with “just saying” seriously.
Good.
Good!
Without a link to a reputable source this is an assertion, but not proof.
The total population of Florida ia ~19 million. If half is of working age, and there is 8% unemployment, that is 760,000 unemployed people. Weekly maximum unemployment comp in Florida is $275. If we take $200 as an average payment, that would be an annual payment of $7.9 billion.
The $100 million you claim for a cost is 1.3% of the annual payments. We only have to catch 1.3% of the recipients taking drugs to justify the cost.
Are you really claiming that 98.7% of the unemployed can pass a drug test?
My personal observation in Oregon is that no more than 20 to 30% of the unemployed around here could pass a drug test.
Even if the program does not pay for itself, it is effective in combating the moral rot that drugs cause in our society.
The “moral” argument is a farce. The real drug problem this country has is in legal prescription drugs, much of which the taxpayer pays for.
That’s where real savings - moral and fiscal - are to be had. If the moral claim is at all serious, that is what we need to be working on, not some marginal percentage of welfare recipients. Just bringing our per capita pharma spending down to OECD average https://data.oecd.org/healthres/pharmaceutical-spending.htm would be $200 billion in welfare payments saved, and it would do so specifically by curtailing curtailing drug abuse.
Logic shines
I have to submit random drug test. It's discrimination against working folks when the leeches get a pass.
Yeah. Your money for SS was kept in that famous lock box. It’s practically an entitlement. Employers can also monitor your email, btw, for those comparing govt benefits to employment. Unemployment benefits eventually run out. It’s temporary assistance. I’m not in favor of growing the surveillance state and fattening the consulting class.
“My primary caregiver had prescribe another BP medicine because of side effects. It gave me a constant dry cough”
I’ve had a cough forever. Maybe that’s it.
I’m curious how this will work with those who use medical marijuana ? The legalization of pot is not uniform to testing methods. Seriously. alcohol clears the system in a day. However one could use it once every few weeks or whenever and it will stay in their system.
There should be away to find out if people are acutely high from pot as they do with alcohol if it is legal in their state.
Plus, those retired have put in to the system. It is not a freebee. Personally, I am anti- drug. But, could care less about those who use recreational or medicinal marijuana.
Fine and dandy as long as the get zero public welfare and unemployment. Test 'em. Do it!
