Daylight-saving time is dumb and we should get rid of it
Business Insider ^ | March 10, 2017 | Dave Mosher

Steel yourself: It's nearly time to turn our clocks forward an hour for the start of daylight-saving time (DST).

This arcane and terrible ritual officially starts on March 13, 2016.

At 1:59 a.m. on Sunday morning, our clocks will wind forward an hour to 3:00 a.m. instead of 2:00 a.m.

That gives us one less hour of sleep and means the sun will rise an hour later than we're used to.

I agree it’s dumb. I don’t need it, or an alarm clock even. My dogs are my alarm clock.

It should not be light at 9 in the evening.

Putting the kids to bed when the sun is up is BS

I normally take the dogs out, then feed’em at 7 AM. I was worried the time change wouldn’t fool the dogs, but they let me sleep until 8 o’clock (previously 7 o’clock).

Of course, the cat wasn’t fooled. She started her crying at the new 7 o’clock (previously 6 o’clock!). How the heck did she know? Visible daylight?

The answer to 5+8 is 13. No way around it. Every group of 50 comments has less than 3% answering 13 and greater than 97% answering 34 and 45. It says at the top that 97% will fail.

I'm sure the answer they're looking for is 34, but in reality, 5+8=13

“How so? It will be darker an hour longer in the morning, so the birds should start chirping an hour later. And you get an extra hour of sleep!”

Because even though the clock says 4:30 am, it’s still 3:30 am in bird time.

Yep - the concept was to force the rest to adhere to old time farming practices and has no place in the modern world. If some localities need the effects, let them deal with it by changing the actual working/schooling hours as needed instead of having the whole damn nation do the inane.

Arizona is with you! So happy I no longer have to run around the house adjusting clocks and trying to figure out what time it is everywhere else in the country.

I’m against DST because it makes the birds start chirping an hour earlier.

I love chirping birds... but in Seattle in the summer time they start chirping at 4:15 am. A bit too early for me! Down here in Arizona they start chirping at a much more civilized hour.

I think DST would be much better recieved if the time changed at 4PM on Friday instead of 2AM on Sunday.

The Alaska Legislature had a bill introduced that would make DST permanent. I hope they follow through on it. We’re already an hour ahead in Southcentral Alaska due to some shenanigans in the 70’s meant to keep the capitol in Juneau.

When I learned that lobbying by the company that makes Kingsford charcoal was a major factor in the extension of daylight savings time, I stopped using that product and haven’t used it since.

And no one needs the sun to rise at 4am.

Some of us have to get up early to go to work. I would rather get up with the sun than in pitch dark.

I agree. It's easy for Arizonians to do away with DST because they are in a southern latitude where they get bright sun almost all year long. Here in the Northeast, we deal with bone-chilling cold most of the year and so the summer months are precious. Without DST, I'd be coming home in the dark most of the year and would only be catching sunset in the summer months. With DST, I have a full hour or two of daylight when I get home. Like I said in an earlier post, I would rather have DST be two hours (at least for the northern latitudes.)

I just spent a couple of week in South Florida the last two weeks of February during standard time. The sun was still shining bright close to 6PM with temps well in the 70s every day I was there. Back home, it would be pitch dark and cold. So easy for them to give up DST. They already have a paradise virtually year round. I'd rather not have them dictate to us up north.

My bod is getting old. Now I know why my grandparents kept
one clock on “slow time” and one on “fast time”. They lived
on slow time and used the other clock for doctors’
appointments or any contact with the outside world.
