A man of his word, Preet Bharara ran afoul of a President who is a shameless, inveterate fabulist. In November, shortly after the election, Bharara met with then President-elect Donald Trump and his senior adviser, Jeff Sessions, who is now Attorney General.
After the sitdown, Bharara told reporters in the lobby of Trump Tower that Trump and Sessions had given assurances he could remain U.S. attorney of the Southern District.
Weeks later, to the surprise of absolutely no one, it turns out Trump's word, like the signage on his buildings, was made of cheap, bendable brass rather than valuable gold. In commerce, the terms of a Trump deal always remain subject to revision; in politics too, it seems a Trump handshake is more feint than firm promise.
That's a shame, because Preet Bharara's brief, devastatingly effective tenure stands as a goal, guide and shining example for other public servants. He monitored the powerful with a wary eye and, when necessary, pursued wrongdoers with great skill, energy and integrity.
Most importantly, he constantly reminded all of us in the public to join his crusades, by demanding better behavior from the titans of Wall Street, City Hall and Albany, and supporting reforms to help ensure that crooks get caught.
Bharara's insistence that New York reach for a higher ethical level rang out in the statement he released in May, shortly after the sentencing of former state Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos. "The nearly simultaneous convictions of (former Assembly Speaker) Sheldon Silver and Dean Skelos, whose corruption crimes were laid bare during fair and public trials, have no precedent. And while Silver and Skelos deserve their prison sentences, the people of New York deserve better."

O LOOK! The New York Gaily News writes another Trump hit piece!
Wow! That’s so surprising!
Anybody appointed by Obama should be suspect, and sent packing. I trust Sessions. Hadn't known this Bharara had prosecuted D'Souza until I read an article linked in this thread.
Pray for Jeff Sessions. He has a daunting task in bringing normalcy once again to the DOJ's Civil Rights Division.
I can’t think of a single, honorable Democrat. Should have been gone day one.
Let me put that bull shit to rest. The Clinton Foundation of New York was a total conduit for personal bribes taken from foreign government for hilliary ,bill and lovely little daughter of Webb. Not a hint at proper prosecution!! Nary a head fake. ETHICS MY ASS!!
Excellent article. Thanks for sharing. Obama appointed this guy. Chucky Schumer pushed for his being retained. Those two facts right there should be an alarm bell. I hope Schumer cries his eyes out over his guy’s being canned.
Didn’t he say no, he wasn’t resigning, President Trump could fire him? Since that’s not President Trump’s job, he hired AG Sessions to do it, how is that not a challenge?
The only issue I have with this is that he was hot on the heels of both Cuomo and DeBlasio - hopefully the new guy or girl will pick up where he left off otherwise we’ll never hear the end of both of them.
Saint Preet should have been canned on day 1.
Sure. He was quick to nail D'Souza on a minor offense, and he dragged his feet with Hillary.
Certainly he sets an example for all future Obama appointees.
The fact that he refused to go quietly proves that he doesn't play well with others..."others" meaning his superiors.
Adios to him...and we'll look forward to his "tell all" book, the one that will get rave reviews in the NY Times Review of Books.
Not a “peep” about the Clintons or the Foundation. Like Hundreds of millions of dollars worth of theft is not significant. All lawyers are the same. It depends on who pays them. I wonder if Preet(?) was involved in the wiretapping of trump Towers? It is his District. No one higher in the food chain. He had to know something. If he didn’t hes not smart enough for the job.
Preet fouled the nest on the way out.
I don’t give a DAMN if this AG planted the flag on Suribachi - he’s a ‘Rat/Obama pick GET HIM THE BLANK OUT!
Problem is I spent four hours finding those two issues. Both dark marks on an otherwise stellar career.
Truth is this guy prosecuted both sides of the aisle. I don't think he should have been fired.
When you are after the likes of the worst mayor in the country de Blasio and you go after the Gov. of NY about as powerful as you can get and force him to squeal on some really big names, you have done a stellar job.
This guy,Baharara did just that.
If Trump had not allegedly told him he would stay several months ago it would be one thing but seems he did unless we hear other wise. This whole thing is not right.
LOl Baharara only made 140k per yr. He’ll get a hell of a lot more than that now, but not “billions”!
Um, “no.”
Thank you and well stated.
Tomorrow’s another day, rodguy.
I’m sure you’ll learn to love again.
LOL I just wanna know what I am missing. Everytime I second guess Trump I wind up on the losing end. So I already know I have missed something just don’t know what it is.
