The root causes of famine are disease, war, colonialism and socialism. All of the countries in the region suffer from a combination of war, caused by Islam and socialism, caused by corrupt politicians.

Any attempt to resolve the problem without eliminating militaristic Islam and political corruption will just result in dependency and the suppress local initiative. Just shipping in food won't help. The guys with all the guns will just steal it. it's been tried before.

“root cause”?

How about a bunch of Population Control fascists who insist that we never assist with meaningful energy development or irrigation.

Then they blackmail them by insisting they participate in sterilization, contraception, and abortion, as condition of shipping them food.

Did I mention that shipping them food completely undermines any local incentive to grow their own crops?

They give an entire village a single solar panel to light a 40 watt lightbulb and then declare to the world that they’ve done great things and “electrified the village with renewable energy”!
(oh....and they charged the American taxpayer $1 Million for this “humanitarian project”.)

You list colonialism as one of the problems. Isn't it the lack of colonialism? Under colonial governments, a western style of gov was imposed, and it functioned under the Europeans who set it up. People moved to cities, got involved in farming, many of these countries became pretty well off. Then they kicked out the colonial government and removed whites from leadership. So now they're falling apart. They're saddled with large populations that aren't capable of maintaining even the most basic human needs.

It's kinda' like a championship team that trades away all of it's best players and still expects to win.
