In 1957, Les Girls became the last Gene Kelly film for MGM and the last Cole Porter score written for Hollywood. None of its songs made its way into the Great American Songbook. The title sounded too much like lay girls, so when NBC adapted it as a sitcom for Larry Blyden in the early Sixties, the title was changed to Larrys Girls.
Cole lost his other leg in 1958, and the fire went out. His last score was for television, a 1958 DuPont Show of the Month for CBS that was telecast live. Viewed in the long run, True Love was to be Coles swan song.
In 1977, during his last days, an enterprising journalist got an interview with this legend of British stage and screen. Cyril said that his favorite role was Captain Hook in Broadway and televisions Peter Pan, a well written turn that permitted him to chew the scenery.
