With Climate Change, California Is Likely To See More Extreme Flooding
NPR ^ | February 28, 2017 | by Lauren Sommer

Californians are in shock that after five years of too little water, the problem now is too much. Some are calling this a wake-up call for California as climate change could bring similar damage.

But this shouldn't be a surprise, says Noah Diffenbaugh, a climate scientist at Stanford University.

"It's actually exactly what has been predicted by scientists for at least 30 years," he says.

He says California is likely to see more extreme flooding with climate change. And the reason is pretty simple. If it's warmer, storms produce more rain instead of snow.

But that's not what California's water system was built to do when it was designed a century ago.

It was built, in large part, around the snowpack in the Sierra Nevada.

California is experimenting with spreading floodwater onto fields where it can seep into the groundwater. The groundwater needs recharging after being heavily used during the drought.

But if the state is going to catch up to the climate it has now, there's still a long way to go.

“With Climate Change, California Is Likely To See More Extreme Flooding”

Or drought, whichever.

Less than six months ago before the rein and floods came, we were assured that California was going to see more extreme drought for the foreseeable future

The climate cult. The high priests and apologists declare: Angry mother gaia punishing a materialistic, wicked and wasteful mankind, can bring any punishment she wants in the form of heat, drought, flood, hurricane, tornado, or even urban unrest and higher prices for avocados.

She is truly all-powerful! We must appease her!

“Defund NPR!”

My wife listens to it and it’s all Trump all the time. He’s really living inside their heads.

It was only a matter of time before they switched from drought caused by climate change to flooding caused by climate change. Whatever is happening, that is bad, is caused by climate change. What frauds. I would take them more seriously if their bs was not so obvious but they just cannot help themselves.

Because two years ago, 97% of scientists were not screaming at volume 11 that it was indeed global warming that was the cause of the drought that was never ever ever end. Problem is liberals totally do not remember this because when you are a liberal, history starts every morning

Dopey water management will have nothing to do with it.

Good golly- not a peep about flooding in Cali before htis0 infact they were claiming climate change was responsible for the droughts- now it’s responsible for flooding? By golly, is there anything climate change isn’t responsible for?

Too little water? Climate Change!! Too much water? Climate Change!! Gee, I wonder what the solution is? Do you think it may have something to do with a ton of regulations and a massive tax and spending program?

Didn’t they just finish telling us California would be in perpetual drought because of climate change?

They obviously haven’t read about the 1861-1862 floods that essentially turned the majority of California’s Central Valley into a sea. If it weren’t for the dams built in the 1930’s to 1960’s, the Central Valley would be under almost that much water right now.

If it's warmer, storms produce more rain instead of snow.

Well, duh. Maybe that's why more storms in Miami are rain storms and not snow storms. Someone please explain to me why a given storm produces more water when it's warm than if the same storm occurs when it is cold.
