Boston Dynamics unveils 'nightmare-inducing' hybrid robot (video)

Google-owned robotics firm and “nightmare” factory Boston Dynamics has released video of its latest creation: a two-wheeled, four-legged hybrid robot named Handle.

The robot can stand on four legs, like Boston Dynamics’ previous creations such as BigDog and Spot. But at the end of its back two legs are two stabilised wheels, which let it stand up vertically and roll around at speeds of up to nine miles per hour. Think “Terminator riding on a hoverboard” and you’ll have a pretty good idea of the impression Handle gives off.

Boston Dynamics says the reason for the hybrid design is the simplicity it affords: rather than needing the complex joints of the fully-quadrupedal bots, Handle’s wheels can speed it around with little difficulty, while its front legs can be used for balance and for carrying loads of up to 50kg.

“Handle uses many of the same dynamics, balance and mobile manipulation principles found in the quadruped and biped robots we build,” Boston Dynamics said, “but with only about 10 actuated joints, it is significantly less complex. Wheels are efficient on flat surfaces while legs can go almost anywhere: by combining wheels and legs, Handle can have the best of both worlds.” The video does not, however, show Handle walking rather that scooting around on its wheels.

See the power outlet on the backdrop behind him?
(I’ve looked, it isn’t. It’s a crack in the curtains.) :D

Vlad just started Khan Academy. He’s finished 1/3 of the 6th grade (his correct “age-grade”) in one day. If we let him work as much as he wants to, he’ll be doing algebra by September.

People can’t learn algebra when they haven’t learned arithmetic.

:)
It is filmed quite a way from here. This area was population controlled by several decades of Inspector Morse.
But believe me I’ll be keeping a weather eye out for film crews.

Arithmetic? That's one of the three R's that they don't teach anymore in government run indoctrination centers..

Arithmetic?

Math is your friend. Computers are your friend.
Color you math workbook to show how friendly it is.

Sing this Hip Hop song about how anyone can be a STEM scholar because STEM is sooo friendly to women.

If you do this, you will get an A+ and be put in AP courses.

And yet, another bite from my desk. If I can, I’m going to junk this thing over the weekend and substitute my drop-leaf table. I just cannot deal with the constant cuts and gouges. Period.

OK. Find a cook who doesn’t use algebra. Or a seamstress/tailor.

As for this this guy from the Cereal State, I’m so very glad he isn’t my neighbor because I would seriesly have to beach-slap him.

I don’t think I’ll ever forget that night. My spouse, my child and I were on Leave, heading from YPG AZ to Central Utah and there was a very full, very beautiful moon. We pulled off the road, somewhere south of Searchlight, and I made it a point to wave at the Astronauts.

What an awesome accomplishment!

I need good news, Moosie. What am I looking for so I can rent, buy or otherwise watch?

What undertaker?

What am I missing?

Sounds like a good plan.

Moose is talking about Midsomer Murders, a British tv program with lots of death.

It does, doesn’t it? If I had the money, I would buy the desk I need and would live with it for the rest of my life. THIS thing is not even close to being adequate. I do entirely too much work on the computer to put up with a mediocre desk.

I’ve heard of Midsomer Murders, and I think I’ve seen at least one of the series. But I don’t think I understand everything I know about it! :o])

"For no particular reason, be reminded that today is National Moon Day."

In almost precisely one month, our national moon will be casting its shadow directly onto Tax-chick's house.

Dark days ahead, T-c. Well, dark minutes, anyway.

Regarding the "national moon", who else has a flag up there? On the other side, it doesn't say nothing. This land was made for you and me ... to look at.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

I need to keep track of that eclipse, so I don’t completely miss it while napping or something.
