WASHINGTON President Trumps newly appointed national security adviser has told his staff that Muslims who commit terrorist acts are perverting their religion, rejecting a key ideological view of other senior Trump advisers and signaling a potentially more moderate approach to the Islamic world.
The adviser, Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, told the staff of the National Security Council on Thursday, in his first all hands staff meeting, that the label radical Islamic terrorism was not helpful because terrorists are un-Islamic, according to people who were in the meeting.
That is a repudiation of the language regularly used by both the president and General McMasters predecessor, Michael T. Flynn, who resigned last week after admitting that he had misled Vice President Mike Pence and other officials about a phone call with a Russian diplomat.
It is also a sign that General McMaster, a veteran of the Iraq war known for his sense of history and independent streak, might move the council away from the ideologically charged views of Mr. Flynn, who was also a three-star Army general before retiring.
Wearing his Army uniform, General McMaster spoke to a group that has been rattled and deeply demoralized after weeks of upheaval, following a haphazard transition from the Obama administration and amid the questions about links to Russia, which swiftly engulfed Mr. Flynn.
General McMaster, several officials said, has been vocal about his views on dealing with Islamic militancy, including with Mr. Trump, who on Monday described him as a man of tremendous talent, tremendous experience. General McMaster got the job after Mr. Trumps first choice, Robert S. Harward, a retired Navy vice admiral, turned it down.

McMaster has sent so many Muzzies to be with Allah he doesn’t shive a git what you want to call them. More #fakenews from the Slimes.
Further verifying this article. Thanks!
I heard that HR Puffnstuff was a never trumper, but can’t confirm..
if you or someone can publish exactly what mcmaster believes islam is (especially vis-a-vis Christianity), then i’ll be in a better position to make a judgment on his
(1) understanding of the problem (assuming he believes there’s a problem) and
(2) how he’ll perform “fixing” the problem.
Or it’s an unnamed source playing off something McMaster said before joining the Trump administration to create a false narrative re something the NYT claims he said after joining. You don’t know which it is, because Trump himself has identified the NYT as Fake News.
Trump has said that accepts that many of his advisers will have different views than he does, and it remains to be seen whether McMaster’s views are a matter of strategic calculation or genuine belief. If the latter, he is a fool.
+1
Thank you, and let’s hear from Trump again on the subject:
@realDonaldTrump
“Anytime you see a story about me or my campaign saying ‘sources said,’ DO NOT believe it. There are no sources, they are just made up lies!”
It's a semantic distinction more than anything else. I don't think there are any practical policy differences which would hinge on such variations in nomenclature...
Why is this guy in this position? Eiter someones ot vetting these folks right or someone’s lying when asked about their views and how they line up with Trumps.
Yes you’re welcome and there you have it.
We are engaged today, as General George C. Marshalls generation was engaged, against enemies who pose a great threat to all civilized peoples. As our World War II generation defeated Nazi Fascism and Japanese imperialism, and as later generations defeated Communist totalitarianism, we will defeat todays enemies, including terrorist organizations like Daesh, who cynically use a perverted interpretation of religion to incite hatred and justify horrific cruelty against innocents. Lt. Gen. H. R. McMaster, speech to Virginia Military Institute, Center for Leadership and Excellence, November 21, 2016
Then in this video from May 2016, McMaster says this same thing. At 14:43, McMaster refers to groups like ISIL, who use this irreligious ideology, this perverted interpretation of religion to justify violence. They depend on ignorance, and the ability to recruit vulnerable segments of populations to foment hatred, and then use that hatred to justify violence against innocents.
Those are Obama/Kerry terms.

We have the left and the MSM approving of this pick as well. Trump can clarify this, and I do hope these sources are wrong, but agai
See posts 29 and 52.
I’ve heard Trump call it political Islam. That may turn out to be the middle ground.
Ugh. This is really unfortunate. Trump should have just left Gen. Kellogg, who was the interim NSA, in the position. He was with Trump from the start. We don’t need any more mealy-mouthed neo-cons in power.
Madness? If you believe everything the NY Times spits out, yes, madness.
Let’s wait to see the story confirmed by more reputable sources.
Read his book and see if you still think he is someone who would be “an Obama general”.
McMaster is extremely aware of the danger of currying the favor of Presidents- that’s a major lesson from his book- and he is as far from a careerist as you can get. His book didn’t endear him to those in power and most likely cost him one star.
We have Arab allies in the war against ISIS and we need their cooperation. McMaster knows these leaders just like Mattis does, and Mattis is just as cautious in his language as McMaster. No one is complaining about Mattis.
There is nothing to be gained by having them disparage the religion of the people they will personally be working with. It isn’t going to bother Trump if they don’t join in saying Radical Islamic Terrorism, Trump has more sense than that. He isn’t hiring them to be his spokesmen.

When Americas most influential Islamophobes are upset, you know the president made a good choice. Score one [for] the swamp, whined Robert Spencer upon hearing the news that Donald Trump appointed Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster to be his national security adviser. Spencer makes a living scaring Americans about the dangers of Muslim soccer moms. John Bolton lost out to this guy? sputtered his frequent partner in whine, Pamela Geller, who scoffed at the general for saying, Every time you disrespect an Iraqi, youre working for the enemy.
The Islamophobes are not wrong to sense that McMaster will be hostile to their worldview, according to those who know him best
He absolutely does not view Islam as the enemy, said Pete Mansoor, who served with McMaster in Iraq
..
Nothing wrong with any of the quotes.
Here is video of McMaster killing terrorists:

So he is soft and you know better?
Man, I hate it when our people use ISISs preferred name for themselves. Why do them such honor? It’s even worse than saying ISIL.
