This is not a prank, Jimmy Kimmel tweeted in December. Yes, I am hosting the Oscars.
Sunday nights show, airing on ABC, is Kimmels third time on the big awards stage, after hosting the Emmys last year and in 2012.
Although Kimmel is typically an entertaining host, this years Oscars could be a low-rated show. A poll by the Hollywood Reporter found that 60 percent of Americans couldnt name one best picture nominee. For the record, the eight nominated movies are Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, La La Land, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight.
The same Hollywood Reporter poll found the potential audience divided on politics in acceptance speeches. Of the 800 people surveyed, divided equally between those who voted for President Donald Trump and those who voted for Hillary Clinton, 68 percent of the Trump voters said they disliked political speeches at awards shows; 22 percent of Clinton voters agreed.
Kimmel told the industry paper Variety that he didnt think his opening monologue would be very political, but there will be some element of that to the show.
But writing for the show goes up to start time and beyond, so a lot of it depends on what happens, Kimmel is quoted as saying.
Announced presenters for the show include Amy Adams, Halle Berry, Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Dwayne The Rock Johnson and Scarlett Johansson. Justin Timberlake, John Legend, Sting and Lin-Manuel Miranda will perform nominated songs.
The official Oscars website pokes a little fun at itself in providing details on watching the show. A common question, the site says, is Do I need to dress up if Im just watching at home? The answer to that last one is yes
yes, you do.89th Oscars

We’ll SOB!...color me SURPRISED...NOT!!!
It will be “turn off” political.
YAWN. Hollywood gettin old from the get go
Try something different. Oh.....thats right, you all have
no ideas.
Where are our PATRIOTS from cali??? They should be out there in the hundreds protesting these assses across the street that night!!!! UGH! If I only lived near that hellhole!!!
I hope it gets political!
Not that I’ll be watching, but I presume it’s rather like watching a bunch of chimpanzees at the zoo. It’s really fun to watch when the chimps start screeching and throwing their arms wildly. I see no difference between chimps at the zoo and these Hollywood types.
I really get a kick at these Hollywood court jesters who take themselves so seriously and assume we do too. Shhhh... don’t tell them. It’s fun to watch them screeching and waving their arms wildly.
I wonder how long Mel Gibson will be able to sit there and listen to all the commie bullsh*t that will be expounded upon while he’s waiting to see if Hacksaw Ridge wins best picture.
But the Hollywood Jesters don’t know that, and it might be fun to watch them LOSE THEIR MINDS all over again at the Prospect of moving to AFRICA!
One way we can ALL protest is by simply NOT WATCHING the Oscars. Period. And that includes the “Red Carpet”. I will be watching Turner Classic Movies on Sunday evening.
I couldn’t care less what these fish think. You lost and so did your millions of dollars. Go ahead and show your anti-American ass on stage. I will never see it or care.
I won’t be watching this year. Couldn’t care less. Let them have their little orgy...
You don’t think people who work in the industry don’t know that?
Why? Because the Oscars is one of the major public "faces" of the entertainment industry (especially the movie industry), and after the debacle with Michael Moore 14 years ago, the AMPAS Board of Governors may impose strict rules on any Trump-bashing, so Jimmy Kimmel could be seriously "muzzled." And the nominees clearly know it, too; one wrong statement could cost the movie studio potentially many, many millions of dollars in movie theater box office revenues.
They could also not get watched.
An evening of glitter and virtue-signaling.
If Jimmy keeps looking like that, his eyes are gonna get stuck.
I hope they do go political this year. In fact, I hope they go totally, completely foaming-at-the-mouth unhinged!!!
I want to see tears flowing over the plight of transgendered Somali refugees who are about to lose their Obamacare coverage.
They do not pay attention do they? They will not get more viewers, they will get less.
I’m not watching.
Looking at the lineup for Daytona Sunday I find no Driver with that name!
I did find Jimmie Johnson, who will be worth watching.
With enough ribs, wings and beer. I will care less about Holloweird, any night!
About the only part of the Oscar’s I have ever watched is the opening monologue by the host. I don’t think they have had anyone really funny since Billy Crystal.
Most are hard to watch, such as Whoopi Goldberg.
