Two months into the citys sweetened-beverage tax, supermarkets and distributors are reporting a 30 percent to 50 percent drop in beverage sales and are planning for layoffs.
One of the city's largest distributors says it will cut 20 percent of its workforce in March, and an owner of six ShopRite stores in Philadelphia says he expects to shed 300 workers this spring.
People are seeing sales decline larger than anything theyve seen up to this point in the city, said Alex Baloga, vice president of external relations at the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association.
In response, the city questioned the legitimacy of the early figures and predicted that customers responding to the initial sticker shock by shopping outside the city would return.
We have no way of knowing if their sales figures and predicted job losses are anything more than fear-mongering to prevent this from happening in other cities, said city spokesman Mike Dunn.
Mayor Kenney harshly rebuked reports of coming layoffs late Tuesday night.

In Philly they didn’t even go through the charade that this was all to encourage people to stop drinking sugary drinks. They went straight down the “city will make a fortune” route. They, being leftist idiots who have the long term forecasting abilities of a two year old, are incapable of predicting the easily foreseen consequences on consumers, stores, and suppliers.
Is there any measure large enough to gauge just how stupid these politicians are?
I doubt it.
The problem is not only are they stupid they are arrogant and have twisted minds.
They thought of that. The tax includes soda concentrates. Not only that, the tax is assessed based on the volume of the diluted end product.
...
Good grief. You can’t even roll your own.
I have a soda stream and I like it....however their Colaflavor isn’t a Coke or a Pepsi. It’s OK, but I like the “real thing” better. The fruit flavors are fine...the root beer is good too.
If Democrats see something thriving, they tax it.
If it continues to thrive, they regulate it.
Once it stops thriving, they subsidize it.
In the case of the food production...
They tax the soda. They regulate the wages and benefits of the workers. They subsidize the corn that is used to sweeten the soda.
And yet they can’t understand why the system isn’t working right.
Looks like people can make their own syrup if they are inclined. Maybe I’m prejudiced but I have a feeling most of the soda crowd is too lazy to do it.

Sounds like a good time for black market soda. The libs will be blaming other cities and states for their lax rules on sodas. Cops will be posted at the city limits just waiting to catch scofflaws smuggling sodas. When I lived in Maryland the cops would sit at the MD end of the Nice bridge between MD and VA and watch MD residents buying fireworks in VA and then arrest them after they re-enter MD. Sad.
Just wait until the sodas and junk food is removed from SNAP. Headlines will be disaster for junk food industry. NOT! As kids we collected pop bottles for our candy money a nickle a bottle. Served 3 purposes, got them off the street and provided poor kids with a candy bar for which the store made a profit.
I don’t drink sodas, they damage your GI tract and cause diabetes with all that sugar and other chemicals.
I don’t drink sugar drinks either. My tea and coffee is straight black and strong.
If I want cookies I bake them from scratch. Less chems in them. Get about 3 dozen vs 12 cookies. And dough can be froze for later use if you don’t want that many.
Buggy whips went out of production when cars were invented.
Liberals have no understanding of basic economics. The Law of Demand is pretty clear....if you raise the price of a good, the market will buy less of it.
What if it's an open container?!?
Anyone bringing their own sodas into town will have to ensure its not a “high-capacity” soda container. Twelve packs will be outlawed. Two liter containers will also be outlawed. Chiraqians may require a “soda owner identification (soid) card” before allowing anyone to drink a soda. And, you won’t be able to drink a soda within 500 feet of any school or government facility. So many things that they can do with this.
I gave up drinking soda five years ago for health reasons.
I feel it was the right decision. As a nation we drink WAY too much of it. Start adding up the calories and sugar and it’s a real eye-opener.
I am not a fan of the nanny state FORCING people to do this however.
How true; and unfortunately, the stupid morons continue to vote for them.
If you like your birch beer you can keep your birch beer.
Oooooooooooooh, that brings some great memories of draft birch (or root) beer. Mmmmmmmmm!
Yes, good stuff from the Earth :)
Nor I. I did the same thing as you. Water, coffee, tea are what I drink. No dairy, mild intolerance, so I save that for cheese. No sea food, that is a trip to the ER.
