A man suspected of killing a Whittier police officer in a shootout Monday, hours after slaying his cousin, was released from prison under a controversial program that many law enforcement agencies blame for an uptick in crime, authorities said.
Michael Christopher Mejia, 26, of Los Angeles, was identified Tuesday by authorities as the suspect in the fatal shootings of Whittier police Officer Keith Boyer and 46-year-old Roy Torres, the suspects cousin.
Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department Homicide Bureau said Mejia was released from state prison in April 2016 following a grand theft auto conviction in 2014. He was on probation under Assembly Bill 109, a state law mandating early prison releases for nonviolent offenders, when he allegedly shot and killed Boyer and Torres. AB 109 was signed into law by Gov. Jerry Brown in 2011.

No..this scum bag killed his cousin in East LA early yesterday morning, took his car and crashed it in Whittier where he ambushed those cops
You can bet the perp was carrying concealed.
Totally tattooed. MS 13 and a wetback?
No need to wonder any longer YES he was illegal, I live in CA. and he was illegal!!!!
At least until California redefines "violent" again to not include sanctified minorities.
He had violated his DAMNED probation 4 times from the original conviction of car theft and the BASTARD parole board let him out AGAIN!!! He was also illegal and should have been deported the DAMNED MINUTE they let him out!!!!
Jerry Brown must be smilling. Blood on his hand, Mayor too. Awful, just awful. No way Brown or Garciti even blinked a eye when they heard this.
Well he’s not non violent now you friggin neanderthals give him the death penalty Calif has 100’s on death row...so he will never be exucudt but 60-70 years on San Quentins death row ought to make him a bit more humble...
He was let out 5 times under this DAMNED LAW he violated his probation 4 times and this DAMNED parole board let the BASTARD OUT AGAIN for the 5th time and he kills a 28 year veteran cop!!!!
Begs the question, will leftist Brown, who helped cause the death of this police officer show up at Boyer’s funeral?
Or will the brass this time have enough balls to publicly bar the SOB from the services?
Liberals love it when cops die..they go on and on about illegals being “torn away from their families” well, officer Boyer was torn from his family yesterday morning..PERMANENTLY
Patrol cops might have zero power against changing the laws you referred to, I agree. But when was the last time cops and their leadership publicly came out in a show of force or in protest, in favor of such permits for the law abiding public?
The man suspected of murdering Whittier Police Officer Keith Boyer is a documented gang member who was arrested and released from jail twice in the last few months, law enforcement sources told KFI NEWS.
Michael C. Mejia, 26, was sentenced to state prison for a robbery in 2010 or 2011, according to court records.
He was paroled, then arrested and sentenced for grand theft auto, authorities said.
Mejia was released from prison as a non-violent offender in April, 2016, and since then, has been arrested at least five times for a variety of probation violations.
After the last two arrests in October and January, jail records show he served fewer than 10 days on so-called, flash, incarcerations.
Mejia was arrested Monday morning after he was wounded in a shootout with the Whittier officers.
Homicide detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department said they planned to book Mejia on a murder charge once Mejia was released from a hospital.
Flash incarcerations were developed as a result of AB-109, the prison realignment program that shifted many state inmates into county jails and replaced state parole supervision with county probation offices.
Flash stays, usually 10 days or less, were supposed to punish parolees and probationers for violations so few would be returned to state prison.
Police officers have complained for years criminals have been taking advantage of the leniency.
On Monday Whittier Police Chief Jeff Piper said AB-109 was one of several unique California justice experiments thats backfired.
We need to wake up. Enough is enough. Youre passing these propositions, youre creating these laws that is raising crime, he told reporters after announcing Officer Boyers death.

So is scumbag an illegal alien or not, or are they just going to not answer the question?
They haven’t said.

Sad. But they get what they vote for.
I bet if you pass a law stating that those names that appear on a document allowing this savage or other savages a free get out of jail card because of thier liberal social justice agenda will be held responsible for his actions.
A patrol officer cannot sign a form under a sheriff or chief of police’s name. Peraonally I don’t think there should be a need for a firm to legally carry.
The comparison is ludicrous on its face as much as any liberal comparing Trump supporters to nazis.
