New National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster is the Neil Gorsuch of generals
National Review ^ | February 20, 2017 | David French

Posted on 02/20/2017 3:49:40 PM PST by cotton1706

Donald Trump has made his choice to replace Michael Flynn, and it’s hard to think of a better man. Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster will be the new national security adviser:

General McMaster is a former commander of the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment, my old unit. I served in Iraq with a host of guys who’d served under McMaster in the Battle of Tal Afar in 2005, and almost to a man they loved him. I never served under him (I came along for the next deployment), but many of the people I respect the most were with him during one of the Iraq War’s most significant urban battles and came away deeply impressed. Indeed, I’d call McMaster the Neil Gorsuch of generals. Like Judge Gorsuch, General McMaster is respected by his peers, admired for his intellect, and possesses an impeccable record of public service. Professionally, he’s in the short list of the best of the best. (Seriously, read up not just on the Battle of Tal Afar, but also on the Battle of 73 Easting in the Gulf War — where McMaster’s outnumbered Eagle Troop of the Second Armored Cavalry Regiment took on a numerically-superior Iraqi armored force and destroyed it in a mere twenty-three minutes).

This is one endorsement that you can believe. As a Army historian, I’ve followed LTG McMaster’s career and even met him. He is a fighting and thinking general. If you are one of those who is looking for a general in the mode of General George Patton of WWII fame, you have found him.

Is he an American Patriot or a globalist???

Indeed, Trump would never appoint a guy with a mustache.

So that's why he didn't call me...

Great. I can’t help but notice we spent years lamenting the fact that the Obama was cashiering all the good Generals. But now that Trump is hiring Obama Generals suddenly that isn’t an issue any longer.

He is a combat general. Read his book “Dereliction of Duty” and decide for yourself. He did not make any friends in the hierarchy when it was published. He has NOT been known to be a political general.

I’m not impressed with Gorsuch either, since he seems to be at best a modestly improved version of Kennedy, but White was one of the original dissenters in Roe vs. Wade and that established his conservative credentials.

He is Army. If he was a globalist, he’d be a Marine. /s

Other than the fact that Obama was in office for 8 years, where do you expect to find any generals or admirals who were not promoted to that rank during his tenure? For me it was the generals he selected for office, it is the same for Trump. Of course, you probably could be expecting Trump to seek the same thing in generals that Obama wanted.

Thank you for posting this.

Two things about McMaster.

In DS, he took on an Iraqi heavy armored Republican Guard brigade + with 6 M1A1 tanks and 9 Bradley APCs. He killed them all with no friendly losses.

He later wrote “Dereliction of Duty” which outlines in incredible detail how McNamara, LBJ, the Kennedy “New Fronteersmen” and the incredibly cowardly and deficient JCS got us into 50,000 Americans in RVN.

Both tours, I knew it was a FUBAR war, but never really knew why until I read his book.

Highly recommended.

I don’t think National Security Advisor will be his final job in the administration. I think he’ll be moving into higher positions.

Re: “White was one of the original dissenters in Roe vs. Wade and that established his conservative credentials.”

I agree that White made some Conservative decisions, e.g. Roe, Miranda, and on limiting judicial power.

On the other hand, he voted with the Liberals much more often than with the Conservatives.

Please remember that White was the Colorado chairman of JFK’s 1960 presidential campaign, and that Al Gore asked White to swear him in as Vice President in 1993.

Also, White was easily confirmed in 1962, when the U.S. Senate was 65% Democrat.

Even though I’m not super excited about an NRO endorsement, at this point, I’m OK with someone in that position who’s liked by that crowd. Steadying the ship and all of that.

The article is wrong about 73 Easting.... The battle involved Eagle troop, Ghost troop, Iron troop, Killer troop, and elements from Hawk company were all involved not to mention 2nd squadron’s How Bat (Howitzer Battery), the 210th FA Bde, etc, etc.

Other notable commanders that day is CPT Dan Miller(I), CPT Joe Sartiano(G), and CPT Haszard (K).

There is certainly a reason President Trump has been so successful. He surrounds himself with brilliant and respected people. And he understands egos, and that having a team such as this requires a certain amount of individual independence and empowerment that needs to be oriented toward a common goal.

Having someone around to be sure everyone is on the same page without curtailing initiative is vital to team cohesion. Highly effective the Trump team will be after the initial turmoil of movement and change as results come into fruition.

Agreed. I have skepticism towards the neutral “respected by all” types. The way Mike Flynn was kicked out attests to how good he really was. He challenged the status quo, stood for something, and therefore was a threat. :(

McMaster is not an “obama general”, and he sure as hell isn’t one of the perfumed princes of the five sided puzzle palace either.
