Donald Trump has made his choice to replace Michael Flynn, and its hard to think of a better man. Lieutenant General H.R. McMaster will be the new national security adviser:
General McMaster is a former commander of the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment, my old unit. I served in Iraq with a host of guys whod served under McMaster in the Battle of Tal Afar in 2005, and almost to a man they loved him. I never served under him (I came along for the next deployment), but many of the people I respect the most were with him during one of the Iraq Wars most significant urban battles and came away deeply impressed. Indeed, Id call McMaster the Neil Gorsuch of generals. Like Judge Gorsuch, General McMaster is respected by his peers, admired for his intellect, and possesses an impeccable record of public service. Professionally, hes in the short list of the best of the best. (Seriously, read up not just on the Battle of Tal Afar, but also on the Battle of 73 Easting in the Gulf War where McMasters outnumbered Eagle Troop of the Second Armored Cavalry Regiment took on a numerically-superior Iraqi armored force and destroyed it in a mere twenty-three minutes).

He sounds like a great general. I hope his skills translate well into cleaning up the national security infrastructure, which apparently includes elements hostile to the current administration.
Well one thing we can now say, when Trump taps a General for a job, it can be expected to be one who is respected and even admired for his combat experience. Mattis, Kelly, Flynn (to a lesser extent), and now McMaster. Cocktail party attending desk jockeys need not apply.
Endorsed by National Review? No comment.
The admiration seems to be universal. Perhaps even NR is getting one right.
I’m glad he’s another war fighter, not a bureaucrat. Looking forward to reading his book.
Thank goodness it wasn’t Bolton. Too much baggage there.
Well, for the record, he is being endorsed by David French . . . so you can place your pearls in safe-keeping.
Lots of #nevertrumpers are celebrating this pick which is not a good sign.
I think Bolton will end up in the Trump administration eventually, as will Chris Christie. Both would be great additions in the proper role.
I hope not.
I am not impressed by Gorsuch.
He clerked for two center-left “swing vote” Judges in the Supreme Court, which means both Justice Kennedy and Justice White felt that Gorsuch would support their center-left orientation.
Also, Gorsuch’s comment to arch-Leftist Senator Richard Blumenthal that Trump's criticism of a federal judge was “disheartening” and “demoralizing” was beyond belief.
Can any Freeper imagine Judge Scalia saying something like that?
Finally, the fact that Never-Trump National Review Online strongly supports Gorsuch worries me even more.
“Thank goodness it wasnt Bolton. Too much baggage there.”
agree 100%
Says the guy with the Tony Blair poster in his closet...smh
Hey, I have a photo of Vladi Putin next to my desk, too. It's an older issue of the Economist, with his smiling mug on the cover. It's on the table, so when I put my beer down, I place it on his face.
Too bad they endorsed him, but doesn’t change the fact that he is a great pick.
I contacted Team Trump Tues night and said to take him. They assured me they heeded my advice.
This is one endorsement that you can believe. As a Army historian, I’ve followed LTG McMaster’s career and even met him. He is a fighting and thinking general. If you are one of those who is looking for a general in the mode of General George Patton of WWII fame, you have found him.
Yes, though I watched a video of him speaking on the future of the military where he waxed poetic about the Obama-era rules of engagement whereby our warfighters increased the danger to themselves, working among the local people, to show what humanitarians we are. I hope he’s not fully of that Obama-style approach.
Gorsuchs comment to arch-Leftist Senator Richard Blumenthal that Trump’s criticism of a federal judge was disheartening and demoralizing was beyond belief.
Sen. Blumenthal is a known liar. He lied about serving in Viet Nam.
“Also, Gorsuchs comment to arch-Leftist Senator Richard Blumenthal that Trump’s criticism of a federal judge was disheartening and demoralizing was beyond belief.”
I heard that was fake news, that Gorsuch had commented that the criticism in general was disheartening and demoralizing, not that Trump’s remarks were.
>> Thank goodness it wasnt Bolton. Too much baggage there. <<
Indeed, Trump would never appoint a guy with a mustache.
And it turns out that Gorsuch is some kind of Episcopalian. [/s]
