Hell; most of us always knew that, we even have grammar police.
I am just surprised they don’t call me out on my misuse of commas and semi-colons.
I’ve been called out a couple of times.
I think I slept through fifth grade grammar. In college, I had a rhetoric instructor who gave me A+ for content and F for spelling and grammar (sometimes multiples of each)...before spell check and grammar alerts in Word. We handwrote essays in class 3x/week. Yes, I am old.
Now, I need to constantly re-check comma use. And guess what? A lot of modern grammar is up to the writer. Comma rules are partially fixed and immutable and partially contested, even by *experts*. This leads me to avoid them wherever possible.
"Hell" is an exlamatory, not an independent clause, and should not be set off by a semicolon.
"Most of us always knew that" and "We even have grammar police" are examples of independent clauses and may either be separated by a semicolon or broken into two separate sentences.
But I suspect you already knew that.
