680 Cubans Returned to Island Since End of 'Wet Foot, Dry Foot'

About 680 Cubans have been returned to the island from various countries since then-President Barack Obama ended a longstanding immigration policy that allowed any Cuban who made it to U.S. soil to stay and become a legal resident, state television reported Friday.

Cuba's government had long sought the repeal of the ``wet foot, dry foot'' policy, which it said encouraged Cubans to risk dangerous voyages and drained the country of professionals. The Jan. 12 decision by Washington to end it followed months of negotiations focused in part on getting Havana to agree to take back people who had arrived in the U.S.

Cuban state television said late Friday that the returnees came from countries including the United States, Mexico and the Bahamas, and were sent back to the island between Jan. 12 and Feb. 17. It did not break down which countries the 680 were sent back from.

The report said the final two returnees arrived from the United States on Friday ``on the first charter flight especially destined for an operation of this type.''

Florida's El Nuevo Herald newspaper reported that the two women were deemed ``inadmissible'' for entry to the United States and placed on a morning flight to Havana.

Wilfredo Allen, an attorney for one of the women, says they had arrived at Miami International Airport with European passports. The women requested asylum and were detained

The surprise decision left hundreds of Cubans stranded in transit in South and Central America.

Before he assumed the presidency on Jan. 20, Donald Trump criticized the detente between the U.S. and Cuba, tweeting that he might ``terminate'' it.

It used to be that all Cubans were allowed to stay. Then Bill Clinton introduced the "wet foot, dry foot" distinction. Without that, there would have been no legal pretext for sending Elian Gonzalez back to Fidel. But without that happening, Gore might have won Florida in 2000 and become President.

After the Berlin Wall was built, East Germans did not have a good chance of making it safely to West Berlin. But if they made it, they were not handed back to the East German government by the West German government.

I know the following will not be acceptable to some, but I believe the entire Cuban scenario could be forever bent in favor of America, conservatives, and Trump, if we were to carry out a high speed infiltration and attack utilizing electronic warfare, controlling their airspace, using SOF teams and simultaneous overwhelming military power in Cuba, to take out the communist government and command and all control. It would need to be a very quick and overwhelming effort to eliminate all of the communist leadership of the country. To say we couldn’t do this is plane ignorant.

Of course there is absolutely the potential for things going sideways at home and in Cuba. However, these people have been brutally treated by their left wing totalitarian slave owners for more than a full generation. Real war crimes have been committed by this thug regime.

Just think of the potential of the return of a free Cuban people and nation on our doorstep, and the geopolitical shift from a communist Russian satellite and socialist tool of Latin America, to a new American friendly shield 90 miles from our country.

The Cuban population in our country may also shift much further toward the right, which would serve to further weaken the true enemy of the liberal socialist agenda here in America.

Ending the communist regime in Cuba would likely reverse the Cuban refugee efforts as well.

Always remember. Bill Clinton sent Elian Gonzalez back to Cuba after he was rescued from the sea and brought to Miami. Clinton will burn for that.

Most want to return to Cuba only if the Castro regime is gone, to rebuild it. Nothing more, nothing less. Sure you have your bad apples, but in the most part, they are very different from those running our border in search of government goodies. The governments of Mexico, Central America and some of South America were on board to publish how to sheets for them to collect once here. You cannot say the same for Cuba.
