Many African-Americans are expressing outrage over a testy exchange between President Donald Trump and a veteran black journalist, with many considering the incident to be the latest indication of his inability to relate to them.
Already skeptical of Trump, many blacks said they were exasperated by the fact that, during his news conference on Thursday, the new president asked April Ryan, longtime White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks, to help broker a meeting for him with black lawmakers.
"Will you meet with the Congressional Black Caucus?" Ryan asked. Trump responded: "I would. You want to set up the meeting? Are they friends of yours?"
The exchange set off a firestorm on social media as many black people balked at Trump's suggestion of an assumed relationship between Ryan and CBC members because they are of the same race.
Susan Rice, U.N. ambassador under the Obama administration, tweeted an article about the incident and called Trump's remarks "notably offensive."
"I'm also really pleased he didn't ask her to sweep and mop in the room where the press conference was being held," Rep. Emanuel Cleaver of Missouri, a former CBC chairman, quipped during an MSNBC interview on Friday.
Adding to the ire: It was the second time in less than 30 days and during Black History Month that Trump said something that came across as indifferent toward black people. The president was ridiculed Feb. 1 for praising abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who died in 1895, as someone "who's done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more."
After Thursday's news conference, the CBC tweeted a copy of a letter, dated Jan. 19 and addressed to Trump, requesting a meeting. The caucus said although it got no response to that letter,

What in the news business this is called a “dead cat” day.
If nothing is worth reporting, you throw a dead cat in front of a politician and report on his reaction.
“The transcript above does not include the entire exchange with the reporter. If you get the entire exchange it makes Trump look even better.
She asked him a question about the inner cities or something like that. He responded with something like, “Finally a good question” and asked about her. I think he made a remark about other journalists asking bad questions, and then spoke highly of her effort.”
Yup, you are correct! I heard it that way as well.
I noticed the “black journalist” only asked about the inner city and historically black colleges. Clearly, she only cares about her race and what Trump will do for them. If any of these “black journalists” ever expressed the slightest concern for any other race but their own, maybe I’d take them more seriously. Trump and other whites are supposed to show they “care” so deeply about blacks and their issues, while meanwhile, poor whites can all die horrible deaths for all blacks care.
And as for the “black caucus,” there shouldn’t even be one, but since there is, Trump should refuse to meet with such a racist group.
The left is itching for Trump to have a conflict, any conflict, with a black person.
But he treats everyone the same.
“Will you meet with the Congressional Black Caucus?” Ryan asked. Trump responded: “I would. You want to set up the meeting? Are they friends of yours?”
Then he explained why he said that. People can be stupid —walk around and sniffing for something to get offended over.
Didn't she invent Fake News ? Lol
For eight years, the media bent over backwards to shield obama from legitimate questions and complaints; now they’re doing the same things to scr*w Donald Trump and try to make him look bad.
Prejudice much?
Someone in the House should propose and organize an official Congressional White Caucus. Start a White-based magazine - maybe entitle it “Lily” (for lily white). Organize the White Tigers, with all the amenities the Black Panthers enjoy with impunity.
Sick of all these racist pigs getting away with their hypocrisy and lawlessness.
Bring it all out into the open for a frank and public discussion. That’s the only way to eliminate the nonsense.
I recall that exact part of the PC. The BBC would not meet with him obviously for political reasons. Consider during the election, he was passionate about rebuilding the inner cities and their education systems:
TRUMP: Let’s go set up a meeting. I would love to meet with the Black Caucus. I think it’s great, the Congressional Black Caucus. I think it’s great. I actually thought I had a meeting with Congressman Cummings and he was all excited. And then he said, well, I can’t move, it might be bad for me politically. I can’t have that meeting.
I was all set to have the meeting. You know, we called him and called him. And he was all set. I spoke to him on the phone, very nice guy.
QUESTION: I hear he wanted that meeting with you as well.
TRUMP: He wanted it, but we called, called, called and can’t make a meeting with him. Every day I walk and say I would like to meet with him because I do want to solve the problem. But he probably was told by Schumer or somebody like that, some other lightweight. He was probably told - he was probably told “don’t meet with Trump. It’s bad politics.”
Wow! I wonder if Trump knew that! It seems like he did. I bet he’s been briefed on all of them.
What bugs me is that stories leave out the fact that he tried to get in touch with Keith Ellison but the man won’t return the president’s calls.
You forgot “People of Color”.
I’ve grown weary of “race relations” being a one-way street. I don’t care anymore.
I sense that the Black Caucus is very much part of the fomenting in the Senate these days. They were griping and complaining about what? I think it was Mike Flynn? Some twaddle. They had the leader griping - an 80 year old, nearly senile - and Larry Elders, black himself, was mocking the whole thing. They’ll never find anything nice to say, never give an inch, and take umbrage at the slightest thing.

I would be wiling to bet a large amount of money that there is a relationship. I think it’s a very reasonable question for many, many reasons. I’ll bet there is a relationship between the CBC and the vast majority of “news” outlets, regardless of the race of the reporter. With a black reporter, the probability is even higher. That is not racist, it’s just a fact.
Show me honest data that says otherwise and then I will concede that it’s racist. If you can’t do that then shut up. (not Mr. Jeeves, the reporters and social media complainers)
Some people just sit around waiting and hoping to be offended. Rather like martyrs wanting to be thrown to toothless lions.
Are Black journalists capable of writing articles on any subject other than Race?
Yes, of course! All we have to do is read Sowell, Elder, WIlliams et al. However, the MSM restricts Black journalists to those who can only stir the racial tensions pot.
How long before ML King, Jr.’s famous “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” will be branded “Hate Speech”?
Most MSM/Libs complaining about this have no idea (or are ignoring) that this same reporter set up meetings between the Clinton campaign (see WikiLeaks Podesta emails, etc.) and the Black Caucus.
She was not selected because she is black for this reply by Trump. He was going to the heart of her already brokering strategy meetings between the Black Caucus and Trump’s opponents.
How could any logically thinking person not love the honesty and transparency of President Trump? He is like a loving Dad who is not going to let his teenager get away with manipulations and lies. He knows he cannot be his teen’s friend because the future is at stake. However, he loves even through the discipline and, actually, the teen knows that because it shows. How refreshing to have a leader willing to risk it all for his country..A leader who is not obliged to do back room deals to survive in office and to be willing to take the outrageous abuse he has taken without flinching. Even down to having those whose practice every narcissistic trait in the book, charge that he has mental problems. I spent a year treating people with mental problems from the mildest to the most severe and this man is as sane as anyone you could ever know. Some in the media have compared our President to Hitler. Do they not know that Hitler used the charge of dementia and mental illness to get rid of people he didn’t like? Go for it, media. You are exposing your softs spot day in and day out and America sees it.
Trump asked if she was friends with them. Is that assuming anything at all?
