YUGE and SERIES UPDATE: I made this up, of course. Some idiot — a Carter national security affairs advisor named Gary Sick — concocted an October Surprise conspiracy theory that Reagan campaign aides secretly negotiated with Iranian officials to withhold the American hostages until after the 1980 elections to ensure Carter’s defeat. The current brouhaha about Trump secretly dealing with Russia to ensure Hillary’s defeat derives from the same ol’ media/Dem impulse to delegitimize a Republican victory. In other words, as someone once said, history may not repeat itself but it definitely rhymes.
