Around the World flopped on Broadway in 1946, and it looked like Coles career might be over.
Coles opinion of the 1946 biopic Night and Day was scathing because he though that Cary Grant playing him was absurd. But the movie was a huge success because of his tunes that were included, and Cole rang the cash register.
In 1948 he returned to MGM for a Judy Garland and Gene Kelly musical from the Arthur Freed unit. By this time, Judy was married to the bisexual Vincente Minnelli, who directed the film. The score had one Cole Porter song. Critics loved the movie, but audiences stayed away.
This is a clip from the film and shows two great entertainers at work.
Tune in next week for more Cole Porter and the Great American Songbook.
