If you are a ruler, and you find the current religion inconvenient, the best route is to found a new one. That way, your problem is solved. The People still have a religion, but you are its pope, er, Defender of the Faith.

I'm less worried about that than about the fact that he attended a Jesuit prep school and *then* converted. I'm a product of a Jesuit prep school. With rare exception, they turn out indifferent or apostate Catholics who very often leave the Church. In my experience, those who leave the Church for Episcopalianism are never anything close to conservative.
