But the stories she tells are heart wrenching, from the therapists who go through the motions, to the parents who are in denial of the prospects for improvement (please do not take this as being applicable to you).
She gives one example of the high hopes parents may have versus the reality of the child's capabilities. That being of a parent who wants her daughter to write in cursive, while my wife is hoping to teach her how to hold a pencil.
My heart goes out to those who have kids with such needs and it is very difficult to find those therapists who really do care and are not just going through the motions.
My son is high fx and needed speech therapy ( he said his ourrrrs and lwwwwws )and some OT for spatial issues with writing.
He is fine now. But to have been able to have a choice!
People don’t realize how much better things will be with a choice.
I believe you.
I have known some great OTs.
My son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS and had trouble learning to speak.
He went to an OT and we were taught some sign language so he could start to communicate with us and that helped. We had to keep an eye on his teachers and assistants and pull him out of classes that were causing trouble. We were totally involved with his education and would not accept their excuses.
As he went through school, he was sent to special classes and eventually we got some medication and he was able to focus and become a better student.
He eventually decided to take himself off the medication as he was able to develop skills to accommodate his abilities. He is very smart and adaptable even as he still has issues with fine motor skills.
Over the years, he got OT and IEP’s in which he exceeded all expectations. Going into Boy Scouts and JROTC he became a leader and gained respect of his peers.
When he graduated, his grades got him a scholarship and he earned his Eagle in 2015. He brought his special needs worker to represent all the workers and gave him a mentor pin as a thank you for helping him.
Today he is going to school to become an engineer. He is a success and will continue to be because of people like your wife. He still has some difficulties but in my speech at his Eagle Court of Honor, he is an overcomer because of his persistence.
Thank your wife for his sake as he is a success story because of people like her.
