That’s a bit different from reality
Mayor Daley and his cops and the NG battled the Weathermen and the SDS and the various yippie factions in and around Grant Park in fall 1969
I watched on TV iwhile in 8th grade fascinated
The media was of course sympathetic to the marchers as they called
That Daley did not appreciate the hard left
The Weathermen after that splintered into above ground yippies and underground bombing radicals
Or they went home or back to school
Not meaning to fight but the city of Chicago was very hostile to them and rightfully so
I wish our cops today extracted a price from rioters
It was late August 1968, just before the election. I happened to be in San Francisco when this was going on, guest of a SF doctor’s family. I was watching the riot on TV figuring that the protestors were getting exactly the trouble that they wanted, when the doctor’s wife piped up about how terrible the cops were, the poor protestors, etc. My first introduction to the bizarrely clueless world of San Francisco liberalism.
I was about your age and also living in Chicago at the time. Remember it well. Mayor Daley was as corrupt as the day is long, but he didn’t put up with a lot of crap.
Yippie Jerry Rubin co-opted himself and became a Wall Street type.
Yippie Abby Hoffman joined an environmentalist group, then got depressed and killed himself.
Eldridge Cleaver, one of the so-called Black Panthers, became an entrepreneur.
And the list goes on. I think the country got bored with these agitators. Leftist thugs crave attention, and when they find their audience has drifted away, most of them go on to other things.
