The American cafe chain Starbucks has faced hefty criticism since it last Sunday declared that the company will employ 10,000 refugees in protest against President Donald Trump's immigration ban.
"There are more than 65 million citizens of the world recognized as refugees by the United Nations, and we are developing plans to hire 10,000 of them over five years in the 75 countries around the world where Starbucks does business," wrote Starbucks' CEO Howard Schultz in a statement Sunday.
During the US election campaign, Schultz campaigned for Hillary Clinton, and now that Trump instead has been sworn in to the office, he supports those who want to fight the new government policy.
But the news has attracted unusually strong protests, reports Reuters. Thousands of tweets are tagged with #BoycottStarbucks in a call to boycott the coffee shop chain. The call has reached out to millions of tweeters.
The protesters also come from very different political camps. African Americans, for example, are raging against Starbucks' investment in new immigrants instead of doing something about unemployment among the black population. Others think that Starbucks should focus on offering jobs to former servicemen instead of refugees, which the café giant talked about doing a few years ago.
Black Rifle Coffee Company, a smaller new contender founded by Evan Hafer, a veteran of the Iraq war, took the opportunity to take advantage of the protests. He now promises to hire 10,000 veterans, reports Fox News, in response to Starbucks politically correct belly flop.
Howard Schultz has responded to the criticism with that the company has hired thousands of veterans in recent years, writes Business Insider. Many left-wing activists also say they intend to support Starbucks after the company's decision to hire new immigrants. So good luck dining with Antifa.
From elsewhere, it sounds like Starbucks tried to hire 10,000 veterans - but can’t find enough who actually want to work there. Can’t blame them for not trying if not enough want to; can’t make people apply for the job.
The taste of Starbuck’s coffee might be improved if they hire muzzies.
Muzzies use their hand instead of toilet paper when they go to the bathroom.
Think about that when you’re slurping down their half-cad-decaf mocha. LOL
Last time at Starbucks I asked for a sweet black iced tea. I got a sweet black iced coffee. Yuck!!!!
There is a locally owned coffee shop up on the courthouse square. They roast their own beans and I pick up my coffee there. They have Indonesian coffees; Sumatra and Sulawesi, that are outstanding.
I don’t understand why SB wants to support the kind of people who smash their windows.
McDonalds has great coffee, and not as expensive as Starbucks. I’m not going anywhere near Starbucks.
I went there once....ONCE!
All I wanted was a medium black coffee....but NOOOOOOOOO!
(they don't have such a thing)
Are you sure you aren't thinking of Black Rifle Coffee Company?
I just visited the Black Rifle Coffee site and the coffee seems even more expensive than Starbucks. 12 ounces of coffee beans for $12.99-$15.99? I’m used to getting 40 ounces of coffee for that price and sometimes Starbucks French Roast is on sale for around $15 for 40 ounces. What are they thinking?
In the past week, I've noticed a lot more traffic near the non-Starbucks coffee vendors. One of them is a tiny shop in a retail parking lot - looks like a renovated Fotomat film processing booth. I thought that little enterprise was surely doomed, but now the cars are lining up for them. :-)
All their coffees taste burnt to me, I don’t like burnt.
I like ILLY coffee. I hope they focus on Coffe and stay away from politics

Has Starbucks explained how their new muslim refugees are going to handle filling the orders for Bacon & Egg, or Ham & Swiss sandwiches that they have to heat up and serve? I don’t see THAT going well, do you?
I agree!burned and disgusting. Can’t stand the stuff so easy to never go there.
Yup, I guess I will add Starbucks to the boycott list along with Uber. Personally I prefer Peets and Lyft, which supply better products. Should be hiring American workers first as there are plenty of native born people who have these skill sets and need jobs.
All their coffees taste burnt to me, I dont like burnt.

I agree, most is over-roasted (burnt). The same thing happens when you burn toast or popcorn
