President Trump will retain former President Barack Obama's sanctions on Russia until the former Soviet power withdraws from Ukrainian territory, according to his top ambassador at the United Nations.
"We do want to better our relations with Russia; however, the dire situation in eastern Ukraine is one that demands clear and strong condemnation of Russian actions," Nikki Haley said in her first remarks at the United Nations Security Council. "Eastern Ukraine, of course, is not the only part of the country suffering because of Russia's aggressive actions. Crimea is a part of Ukraine. Our Crimea-related sanctions will remain in place until Russia returns control over the peninsula to Ukraine."

I’m less concerned about the recent hostilities in the Ukraine than by the Haley statement that sanctions would remain in place as long as Russia remained in Crimea. Russia will never leave Crimea, originally part of Mother Russia, up until Kruschev, who was half Ukrainian, gave it away to Ukraine in the 60’s. It was always part of Russia before that.
Plus, the U.S. was intimately involved in the coup against the Russian oriented leader of the Ukraine, that lead to the hostilities in Ukraine in the first place. What right did the Obama Admin have to stir up trouble in a country that borders Russia? The Ukraine is not in our backyard, it is in Russia’s backyard, and they were upset with reason.
Crimea is Russia’s warm water port where they keep many of their ships. After the coup, they took over Crimea to protect their ports from the western leaning newly installed Ukrainian gov’t via a western instigated coup. I might add that the Ukraine is a thugocracy with Nazi-like propensities. We should never have been mucking around in Russia’s traditional backyard; the West opened up a Pandora’s box.

Crimea was annexed by Russia in 1783. Not a part of Russia before then.

You know what I meant. It was part of Russia for a very long time. I used slight hyperbole (like Trump) to make my point that Kruschev gave it away to the Ukraine in the very recent past. It was NOT part of the Ukraine. I wasn’t talking about pre-Russia that has no pertinence to today’s Russia/Ukraine issues.
And in your world Putin’s mass murder in Ukraine is justified out of Christian love. But you probably supported the KGB and GULAG, too, when they were in operation.

Blame America first. Putin has no more right to steal Crimea than he has to be president for life. The rule of law, elections, self rule, and a free society are all alien ideas to the KGB thug. Rebuilding the former Soviet Empire should never be an American conservative’s idea of beneficial to the USA or the world.
I am well aware of your hostility to Russia from your prior posts. Either you are Ukrainian, or you would prefer a return to Cold War status with Russia, which is not in the U.S. interest.

In 1992, the Crimean legislature voted for independence from Ukraine. Ukraine of course rejected the idea. Russians are a minority population in Crimea. Maybe independence is not a bad idea.
