os Angeles (AFP) - US President Donald Trump threatened Thursday to withdraw federal funds from UC Berkeley after violent overnight protests against a planned appearance by a controversial editor of conservative news website Breitbart.
Hundreds of students and other protesters chanting "shut him down" smashed windows at the University of California campus, set wooden pallets on fire and threw fireworks and rocks as police in full riot gear responded with tear gas.
The university was placed on lockdown as the sold-out appearance by Milo Yiannopoulos, a conservative firebrand, was canceled Wednesday evening.
"If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view - NO FEDERAL FUNDS?" Trump wrote on Twitter Thursday.

Every protest we've seen since the election has been coordinated and paid for by someone!
Every. Damned. One.
In my opinion these organized riots go way beyond the protections offered by the First Amendment. The rioters ought to be arrested and prosecuted to the absolute fullest extent of the law and whoever is sponsoring them ought to face the same consequences. And if they crossed state lines to participate in or organize a riot it's a federal offense.
Arrest a couple hundred and let it be known that they face 5-10 years in prison and we'll go a long way toward convincing these rent a mobbers that there's a better way to make a buck.
I heard on Fox that the sponsors, a Young Republicans campus club, are required to pay money up front for security when they have a conservative speaker, which is another way to squelch getting such speakers. Perhaps the university itself doesn’t feel any obligation to stop violent protests.
A year or two ago, Ben Shapiro had tried to speak at Cal State L.A., and there were so many protestors that people had a hard time even getting in to hear him — and many could not. It’s really pitiful how conservative thought is completely unwelcome and can’t even be heard on campuses. No attempt is made to keep discourse civil and intelligent.
You know, he’s got a point. How often have we heard that if a school doesn’t comply with federal requirements on homosexuality and now (we presume) transgender freaks then why should they get a pass for discriminating against a conservative homosexual?
The more I think about this the more pissed I get. He should cut off funds as paper. I read tweets from Hollywood like Judd Apatow encouraging this violence last night. Also the producer of the Stranger Things show calling for people to punch us..people while THINK differently from them, in our face. Well let these millionaires and billionaires who sit behind their WALLS and security gates, the ones who incite this violence against us, let THEM fund Berkeley. Let THEM set up student loans and research programs. Screw this. We’re funding this filth to commit violence against us.
No, it is 100% the schools’ fault. They are aware of and likely coordinated with the brownshirts.
The “students” are doing this because that is what the teachers teach them.
Faculty like to attend speeches by Bill Ayers and the like.
WHEREAS the laws of the United States have been, for some time past, and now are opposed, and the execution thereof obstructed, in the State of California by combinations too powerful to be suppressed by the ordinary course of judicial proceedings, or by the powers vested in the marshals by law.
Now, therefore, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States, in virtue of the power in me vested by the Constitution and the laws, have thought fit to call forth, and hereby do call forth, the militia of the several States of the Union, to the aggregate number of seventy-five thousand, in order to suppress said combinations, and to cause the laws to be duly executed.
The details for this object will be immediately communicated to the State authorities through the Defense Department
Also, just like the LGBTQFUBARS identified, shamed and forced resignations of prominent people who opposed gay marriages, perhaps the members of the alumni associations with their endowments that funnel tons of $$$ to diploma mills like Berkeley should be similarly shamed. Beat the libs at their own game.
Fascists Against Fictionalized Fascists. FAFFists.
I am curious how much funding they get.
1). Students receiving grants and government backed student loads.
2). Research grants
Cut it all off.
BTW, I have always thought that schools should not receive federal money. That money in the past has been used to force the schools to follow a leftist agenda. So, it is a bit refreshing to cook them in their own oils.
If I were the parents of that young woman who was pepper sprayed in the face while speaking on camera I would be at my lawyers office this morning crafting the largest lawsuit in history against UCBerkley
Do what needs to done President Trump.
Rioters call it democracy. We all know what the Founding Fathers thought about democracy.
As a Berkeley graduate myself, Trump could go a long, long ways toward destroying leftism with this line of attack. Berkeley gets many millions of dollars in federal funding of all sorts, they could never tolerate such at thing. The students are not the problem there, for the most part. They are the victims. I’m 100% sure that the event was shut down by anarchists and thugs from the surrounding areas. If you take Berkeley and other schools like it away from the left, you’ve taken a major underpinning of everything that they have.
Is it just me, or do organized “anarchists” in uniform sound like a contradiction?

Individual campuses of the University of California appear mulitply, UCLA, UC San Diego, UC San Francisco [medical], UC Berkeley, UC Davis.
Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, operated under contract by UC for the Department of Energy, is not listed.
Of course! Students gets Title IV tuition loans (that are never repaid) and tens of millions of $$ in grants and research funds.
Even better, is to yank tuition loans to students charged with unlawful activity on campus.
In 2015 they got over 400 Million in Federal funds

(looking at one line on their financials-other funds could be in there too)
