WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About 900 U.S. State Department officials signed an internal dissent memo protesting a travel ban by U.S. President Donald Trump on refugees and travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries, a source familiar with the document said on Tuesday, in a rebellion against the new president's policies.
A senior State Department official confirmed the memorandum had been submitted to acting Secretary of State Tom Shannon through the department's "dissent channel," a process in which officials can express unhappiness over policy (http://bit.ly/2jOYW0y).
White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Monday he was aware of the memo but warned career diplomats that they should either "get with the program or they can go."
A draft of the dissent memo seen by Reuters argued that the executive order would sour relations with affected countries, inflame anti-American sentiment and hurt those who sought to visit the United Spates for humanitarian reasons.
It said the policy "runs counter to core American values of non-discrimination, fair play and extending a warm welcome to foreign visitors and immigrants.
Trump on Friday signed an executive order that temporarily bans refugees and people from seven Muslim-majority countries, sparking tumult at U.S. airports and protests in major American cities.

Fire them. If they’re civil service and can’t be fired, then reshuffle them so that they’re all working out of the basement, preferably with a mop and bucket. There are ways to put people that are a serious problem in positions where they are very uncomfortable. Uncomfortable enough to reform, or to leave on their own.
900 job openings? Please have your first cup of coffee. 900 JOBS ELIMINATED!
I’ll see their 900 names and raise them 306 ELECTORAL VOTES!
Sounds like a department that needs draining. DT drain the swamp!
900 Federal workers supplied their own “for cause” reason for termination.
How sweet!!!!!
“Good people.” Aye, there’s the rub, huh? I hope CGASMIA68 had tongue firmly planted in cheek.
900 out of about 70,000 (1.2%) doesn’t sound like a whole lot to me and considering that many of them are political appointees who will likely lose their jobs anyway, this is pretty much a non-story or at least a story that requires better explanation than provided. But what else is new?
Why?
Look and then follow the money trail.
Indeed! Fire them all!
Our Armed Forces cannot *protest.* Government employees should not be allowed to do so either.
Oh goody, volunteers to be axed!
The unmitigated gall of these leftists to always be the arbiters of "American values." Such staggering arrogance! I say our values are "keep our enemies out of the US, keep us safe from terrorism and use Israeli screening methods to do so."
My thought was that the US embassy in Antartica is going to be well staffed!
(It is an interesting world that these civil servants live in!)
I thought smart liberals understand the right against self incrimination?
This will help Trump determine which half to let go.
Show me the letter of complaint that they signed in 2011 when Obama temporarily banned Iraqi citizens and I’ll take their complaint seriously. Show me the letter that they signed in 2016 when DHS put together the list of countries to ban that Trump is using and I’ll take them even more seriously. Until then, they are just whining for political points.
Spicer said the other day that they should consider resigning if they feel that strongly. That would make an excellent start towards draining that particular part of the establishment swamp.
Trust me when I say this. All 900 are gone. Trump is just waiting to get Tillerson seated so they can look at the risk and mitigation strategy before pulling the switch. You don’t just fire 900 people without a strategy in place.
