It was a claim that President Donald Trump repeated on the campaign trail: that he would build a wall and that the Mexicans would pay for it. In his first few days in office, Trump appeared to make good on one portion of that promise, by signing an executive order for the planning and building of that wall to proceed.
But the cost for that wall will temporarily be borne by Americans, Trump said, and Mexicos government insists it will not pay for the construction on the border. On Thursday, President Donald Trump floated a 20 percent tax on imports from Mexico which suggested that until Trumps promised reimbursement from the Mexicans materializes, Americans would pay for the border wall with their pocketbooks.
The White House clarified afterwards that Trumps suggestion was an option rather than an official proposal, but social media users quickly questioned the possible uptick in one particular grocery item: avocados, of which 80 percent come from
Americas southern neighbor. Though the price of the guacamoles main ingredient varies from market to market, the creamy green fruit usually costs a few dollars. Assuming a $3 cost, a 20 percent tax would increase the price to $3.60.
Takis, a common packaged food snack, would go from $6 to $7.20, the Washington Post reported. Other staples like tomato paste would also see only a slight markup, from about $1.20 to $1.44.

Dos Equis. Una cerveza, por favor.
The worst-tasting distilled spirit beverage I ever drank was Four Roses whiskey--and it's supposed to be great. Almost as bad is Pyrate rum, which is expensive.
Give me Iwai whiskey from Japan and Barbancourt rum from Haiti.
I'm not a big tequila fan, but I like margaritas.
Corona is the worst tasting beer in the universe, it requires lime to prevent the gag reflex.
Moskovskaya beer, which was ubiquitous in Moscow when I visited there in 1972 was the worst I have ever had. If you wanted good beer in Moscow, you had to seek out Stella, an Egyptian beer. Seems Egypt was sending beer to the Soviet Union in exchange for missiles and military hardware to fight Israel. But now that the USSR is history, Moskovskaya may may no longer be brewed.
There are literally a thousand American beers now thanks to the local brewing revolution, I can drink USA beer and never touch a Mexican beer again.
American beer drinkers today are in hog heaven.
It’ll put Americans to work which will lower my taxes. Well worth it.
I hate avocados, so I’m good.
They drink a lot of pisco in South America but you can’t get it up here. Much better than tequila.
A quick calculation - that $113 Billion comes to $485. per adult in the U.S.
I’m guessing the $113 Billion doesn’t count the cost for illegals driving drunk, robberies, rapes and murders.
Okay - average monthly food bill for a family of four is $786. Lets say that we have to pay 10 percent more - that’s $80/month x 12 months = $960 per year. But - say that “family of four” includes two adults - so that is $485 x 2 = $970.
So the increased food price is a wash (if the Feds would lower our taxes!).
So we would get the reduction in crime for free!
I was out to dinner with friends last night, a rare occasion of late, hadn’t seen them in over a year. We tried a new place, had a great time, seated in an indoor-outdoor space that could be enclosed and heated with a huge fireplace, seated right in front of it. They had a special on Patrón, $6.00 rocks with a lime wedge, so we ordered a round and then a second round before dinner. It was excellent, very mild, faintly peppery. None of the harshness or peculiarity of some tequilas. It’s filtered like the better vodkas are. I’d hate to pay the freight to buy a whole bottle, but it was nice.
The raghead goat-rapers drink a lot of camel urine.
I love avocados. Eat them all the time. Still cheaper to pay for the avocados than the illegals.
The Poles must raise garlic, or the Italians.
It’ll grow most places that’ll grow a garden, just put cloves in the ground in the fall. Once they’re established you’ll have more than you can use. Elephant garlic does particularly well here.
If you just want to buy it, Gilroy, California is famous for garlic, bills itself as Garlic Capital of the World, huge festival, heaven for garlic lovers. I’ve done it twice. Newbies should try the garlic ice cream, not bad, roasted so it’s sweet. No need to buy it again once you’ve had it once, tourist novelty, makes for interesting conversation.
A Mexican avocado from a Mexican market is far superior to anything grown in California. We eat at least one a day. With that said, we’ll just do without avocados if the price becomes prohibitive.
Dos Equis with salt and lime? Hate to give those up, but I probably should anyway. I’ll pay the difference for the occasions that we really want to drink a few beers.
No margaritas will suck, but I will survive without them. Something else I should probably give up regardless.
Meh. I’ll do without most anything if it means keeping the illegals out of this country.
California, Florida and Cuba have more avocados for sale than does Mexico.
BS static analysis from an economic illiterate. The author doesn’t even seem to stop and consider domestic production will increase.
Omg buying Mexican avocados is a crap shoot rip off. I guess it’s okay for more American citizens to die needlessly because of illegals so I can buy their crappy produce. Is it me or has produce gotten on average worse across the board over the last 8 years.
Your reference to Chilean ag goods reminds me that the money doesn’t all stay in Chile. A few years back, I was living there. A product for grapes and orchard use showed up, and. I was asked to give a bunch of talks at grower meetings. I noticed that certain names I recognized from earlier work in CA kept popping up. Long story shot, US growers from the Bakersfield area had bought 49% shares in many farms, brought in US technology, and were returning on capital 12 months a year. (Chile 6 month s out of phase, for those in Rio Linda)
Exactly. I am a member of Costco and check all fruit and vegetables before I buy. I WILL NOT buy any food from Mexico, South American countries, China, Vietnam, etc. I don’t trust them. I will buy US, Canada, South Korea, Japan, European countries and Israel.
Fake news.
20% import duty does not equal 20% retail price increase.
Nike pays about $4 for a pair of running shoes from the country of manufacture. A 20% import tariff would $.80 in cost to a $120 pair of shoes.
We look for Haas Avocados when buying, as they have a higher fat content than others.
If I can’t pick out the right alternative avocado I’ll ask the closest abuela and they are always right....
