They were to land on Key West and conduct affairs as if the islanders were foreign. However, no one from the 478th notified Conch officials of the exercise.

TX seceded from the USA and all federal facilities including bases and military planes belonged to the new government and arrests were made of federal officials. Lots of discussions took place about what to do about this or that and one that stuck in my mind was:

The difference was those states did not have Lincoln on their ballots at all. Breckenridge and Douglas took those states.
The Democrat split caused Lincoln to be elected. If they had held together with ONE candidate, Breckenridge or Douglas would have been elected, the Civil War would not have been fought and blacks would have been on their knees to their Democratic masters saying “Yassah, Nosah! Anything you say Massah”!
Instead Lincoln was elected, the Civil war fought, slaves freed, and 150 years later, the blacks are on their knees to their Democratic masters saying “Yassah, Nosah! Anything you say Massah”!
