Calexit: Group has 180 days to collect signatures for secession

California has granted a pro-secession group 180 days to gather enough signatures to get their Calexit initiative on the ballot. From the Hill:

The California secretary of state’s office announced that the group could begin collecting signatures on Thursday.

The group needs 585,407 signatures from registered voters over the next 180 days to qualify for the ballot.

The mechanism here is not very straightforward. If the Yes California Independence Campaign can gather the needed signatures in time, that would put an initiative on the ballot next year. That initiative, if passed, would change portions of the California constitution and set up a California nationhood election in 2019. From the LA Times:

If the measure gets on the ballot and gains approval by a majority of voters, it would repeal clauses in the California Constitution stating that the state is an “inseparable part of the United States” and that the U.S. Constitution is the “supreme law of the land,” according to the title and summary prepared by the state attorney general’s office.

The measure would place another question on the ballot in 2019, asking whether California should become a separate country. If at least half of registered voters participate in that vote, with at least 55% of those voting to approve, the results would be treated as California’s declaration of independence.

If all of this sounds very fringe, keep in mind that a recent poll found 32% of Californians supported the idea of secession. So, at the very least, there should be millions of people willing to sign a petition to put this on the ballot next year. Given that this movement was accelerated by the election of Donald Trump its success or failure will probably depend on how President Trump is doing next year or, more precisely, how Democrats judge he is doing. Given the hair-on-fire response to his first week in office there’s not much reason to suppose things will settle down.

With recounts and faithless electors and protests unable to change the country’s course, angry progressives could decide secession is the only remaining path for ‘the resistance’ to take. Plus, the idea of declaring independence from Trump and ‘fly-over’ America might prove irresistible. Based on the polling, it already has for many on the left coast.

The federal government (Interior, Forest Service, BLM, military, etc.) owns 45.3% of California. How are they going to resolve that issue?

Most of California is till American.

The Bay area counties would likely become the Independent State of California Del Norte. For the sake of simplicity, well call it “Sodom”.

The La Basin and Valley areas would likely become the Mexican State of California Sud., a.k.a. “Gomorrah”.

I should vacation in California and volunteer to collect signatures for them. I want them to leave the union.

... because they'll fall into anarchy in short order. Then, America can invade them, conquer them, change their constitution, make them a Federal territory run directly by Congress, convert their people to Christianity, and basically rub their noses in it for a hundred years, just like the Roundhead Yankees did to the South.

wonder if California could take up a petition to throw LA and San Francisco out of the state?

Wasn’t there a movement to split the state? That would make more sense than secession.

Can I vote yes for them even though I don’t live there? I think they are on to a great thing for the rest of the country.

Eleven state have tried this before. It did not go well for them.

If California tries to secede, President Abraham Trump should declare it to be a "State in rebellion" and militarily occupy it. In 2020, the Occupied Territory of California would have zero electoral votes. Guaranteed Republican victory in that year's Presidential election.

Do they also have to be registered LEGAL American Citizens ?

I continue to believe this would be good for all concerned. California was once part of Mexico. Perhaps they would like to renew that relationship.

The big change would be the border Mexicans would cross to get to America.

There is precedent for this.

They vote to secede.

The President says you may not do so.

They attempt to take a federal installation, say, San Diego Naval base.

The rest of the Union declares the state in rebellion.

They are conquered, subjugated, and subject to federal military administration and reconstruction for years.

It could work.

Republicans have the most experience with this.

Thinking of this from the perspective of democrat party operatives, I say go for it. It will just make it harder for democrats to win elections.

The democrat party will not allow 55 electoral votes to just go away.

I say let it happen so we can watch when the democrat party, at the national and state level, stomps on the secession organizers necks to make sure this will not happen.

The California libs will splinter giving conservatives a chance to turn the state red, or at the very least, putting the state in play for future presidential elections.

LET California secede-PLEASE! They THINK they control the country- so let them BE one and then negotiate with the US for everything from water to oil. Once Mexico occupies them fully we can extend the wall northward to seal them all of in their imagined utopia.Their own transgendered army for defense, their own tax and economic system( everything free for everyone), Kumbaya as their anthem and Meryl Streep and Rosie O’Donnell as co- Presidents! Just think of all the implications! It would be sweeeeet!

You got in ahead of me.

Maybe there could be a Constitutional Amendment to the effect that Citizens have to be born in the United States, or resident for 70 years before they obtain voting rights.
