The White House is drafting a presidential directive that calls on Defense Secretary James N. Mattis to devise plans to more aggressively strike the Islamic State, which could include American artillery on the ground in Syria and Army attack helicopters to support an assault on the groups capital, Raqqa, officials said.
President Trump, who is to make his first visit to the Pentagon as commander in chief on Friday, will demand that the new options be presented to him within 30 days, the officials said. During the presidential campaign, Mr. Trump repeatedly said that he had a secret plan to defeat the Islamic State, but he also said that he would give his commanders a month to come up with new options.

Then we will have to be committed to kill millions, perhaps all 1.6 billion. I cannot support that moral or logical grounds as they are busy killing each other so why waste our time?
Because they declared war on us and it will not stop.
And we armed them, provided training, weapons and support to “rebels” who extremist Islamists.
Now we’re supposed to put our young men on the ground to fight crazed islamists who we trained and armed? Why don’t we just murder our soldiers here and save money?
For every terrorist attacker, we determine his home town and vaporize it.
They’ll start reining in their murderers pretty quickly.
Nope. Just blow them up.
Where did I say anything about troops? We need them on the borders.
We have been promoting destabilization. We have been arming ‘rebel’ groups (directly or through our surrogate Saudi Arabia) such as ISIS, Al Nusra, FSA as well as many subsidiary and sundry headchopper organizations.

Why don’t we just stop doing that and then proposing that we go in there and sort them out?
Or it might not. Artillery is heavy and slow moving.
Why do that when you have AC-130s, A10s, bunker busters, Predators, Hellfire missiles, fighter jets, smart bombs, MOABs, daisy cutters, fuel bombs etc etc etc
Let somebody else "hold the ground".
“As Bush or Rumsfeld said something like: We need to kill them over there so we wont have to fight them over here”
They were both idiots. We don’t have to fight them here if you stop ***letting them in!***. Did I miss where the moslems were building Higgins boats and Liberty ships?
“Then Obama and Hillary INVITED them over there. “
Bush increased Saudi student visas 16 fold after 9/11 and admitted 800k moslems into the nation after 9/11. Obama slightly bested him.
This was bipartisan.
Just kill ‘em All, let Allah sort ‘em out.
It’s not a religious civil war. It’s ISIS wanting to take the reigns from mostly secular leaders. That would include control of their munitions.
This didn’t just happen. obama let ISIS get out of control.
Egypt’s Al Sisi is doing his best to keep MB out of power, Assad was bad news but NOTHING compared to ISIS.
We GOT involved when Bush decided to go into Iraq. Too late to say we don’t need to get involved now.
“Artillery adds dignity to what would otherwise be a vulgar brawl” .... “... David Grossman in On Killing wrote that artillery fire consistently accounted for the majority of combat casualties throughout the 20th century.”
Arty’s game is never called due to weather but rather reliably carries the mail through rain, sleet or snow.
Improvements in rounds make already amazing accuracy seem magical. On the downside to good news, arty still needs hardy observers on the ground in some proximity to the targets. Analogous to a sniper & spotter with a 155mm rifle.
Close air is more than wonderful. But once upon a time I found great comfort in having arty on-call and dialed in to our needs. Walked us out like a sheepdog shepherding it’s flock.
We are involved whether we like it or not - we can either engage or just try to defend for ever and a day....
Nothing changes except around the edges until the ROEs are eliminated. Right now, US troops cannot open fire until fired upon, provided legal agrees.
I am dreaming of B-52’s making the rubble dance.
Which the Iraqis and Syrians are already supplying. We're also limited on the Syrian side by Russia. Then there's the nation-building piece that will inevitably rear its ugly head.
I'll take: "Why Jimma Cotta Sucks"...for $200 Alec.
Obama is ISIS.
