Rofl! Betty White is such a smart and funny lady.
Probably saw that one but don’t remember it offhand
I recall a hilarious spoof in MAD Magazine in the 70s. She was called “Mary Tailor Made” because she was so goody two shoes perfect
If you want to off yourself and also get your life insurance to pay off spread out your gun cleaning stuff out in front of you then shoot yourself in the head. It’s an accident......
That show was David Janssen’s first starring vehicle (before the memorable “Fugitive”).
Lover her on Match Game and as Sue Ann Nivens
Great moment on MTM when Sue Ann not so subtly let it be known in front of them all that Lou had slept with her. He gave that classic embarrassed “Oh s***” look as everyone turned to him and smiled
I believe the SHOCK that began the Mary Tyler Moore pilot is that Mary had GASP!!!!!!! done IT (!!!!) with her fiancé and he had left her. So she had to MOVE CITIES in the horror and shame. So she was a woman who had actually had sex!!!!! Yikes!!!!!! And now was introduced to a whole new cast of characters.
Unbelievable how much mores have changed. Sex was such a hint back then. Like when her boss comes in drunk to her studio flat with her GASP ! BED in the scene, and she was probably in her pajamas.
I’d like to see more of that show now that I am an adult, just for those changes.
Carroll O'Connor, during the heydays of All in the Family, did a Playboy interview where he opined that drug laws were not good, and said that if marijuana were legal he'd keep it around the house for his friends that smoked.
When he was the star of In the heat of the Night, and was trying to keep his son off drugs, he did an interview complaining that even as the star of the show, he couldn't keep drugs off the set. That was after Howard Rollins had to be let go because of drug problems, also. Apparently some of the crew were sneaking drugs to O'Connor's son, Hugh.
Sorry. Off topic.
She had a big fight with the producers to let Laura Petrie wear pants.
Mary Tyler Moore passed away..RIP to a true great icon
R.I.P. Mary Tyler Moore
Really? I never knew she lost a son. I’ve long been familiar with Mary Tyler Moore but didn’t know that. I am not a fan of her namesake show, but I loved her in that movie “Ordinary Family.” That film showed her in an entirely new light. Sadly, it dealt with one dead son, grief, another suicidal son, and a disintegrating family. That must’ve been monumentally hard for her!
Given the film was made in 1980, the fact she lost her son that same year makes that film all the more remarkable. Anyone familiar with that film knows the raw emotional acting and her seemingly incomprehensible distance from her actor son were a hallmark of it. Now it takes on a whole new meaning. I’ll bet there wasn’t much “fake” acting in that.
She’s not Laura Petrie.
It is interesting that you say that. I was wondering how an accidental death while cleaning could happen, myself. Where did the bullet land? I suppose it might be possible to clean a loaded gun and somehow, somehow, shoot yourself in the femoral artery region and bleed out before help could arrive, if you were alone, maybe no phone near by??
But if he shot himself in the head, he wasn’t cleaning.
And maybe she wanted his suicide to be private, so that was listed as the cause of death, like pneumonia often was for AIDS?
See, I have to watch that series again! I don’t remember that at all!!
Where can one watch it all? On Hulu?
Oh, she died. I am so sorry. RIP, you made so many people happy with your entertainment.
It wouldn’t shock me to know that her son committed suicide, but until I hear evidence to the contrary, I choose to believe the official findings...
The shotgun death of Mary Tyler Moore’s son, Richard, is the latest chapter in a chronicle of tragedy which has stalked the lives of the children of the stars.
Richard Meeker, Mary’s only child, was 24, employed by CBS-TV and living with a pair of college coeds when he killed himself with a shotgun with which one of his housemates said he was ‘playing, loading and unloading.’
During part of his mother’s successful TV career and her marriage to producer Grant Tinker, Richard lived in Fresno, Calif., with his father. He attended public school in Fresno for at least two years.
According to stepfather Tinker, ‘Richard was a happy, well-adjusted kid.’
Richard lived with two co-eds near the University of Southern California and according to one of them, Judy Vasquez, 21, was talking happily to his girlfriend in Fresno when the shotgun discharged.
One of Richard’s superiors at CBS, where he was a messenger, said he was a normal, well-adjusted young man, adding, ‘Nobody will ever make me believe his death was anything but an accident.’
Originally, the plan was for her to be moving to Minneapolis after her divorce. The producers nixed that because they didn't want people to think she'd divorced Rob Petrie. The new plot line was that she had been engaged and they had broken up. They were pretty coy about her sexual activities, except for a few asides, like when her mom and dad were visiting and her mom asked her dad if he'd taken his pill and both he and Mary said "yes" at the same time.
I remember that she visited with a junior high school friend of mine who later died of lymphoma. He said she was really nice but he couldnt believe how skinny she was.
If someone fatally shoots themselves in the head, in what is a genuine accident, then that person was probably so stupid and careless they were a menace to society. Maybe it’s good they are gone. God bless.
