A 4-mile section of Highway 89 on either side of Emerald Bay remains closed, with some sections buried in up to 30 feet of snow, according to the California Department of Transportation.
Caltrans maintenance crews are working to clear the highway, but with more storms expected this week, the highway wont reopen until an extended period of dry weather allows workers to safely clear the area of snow and debris, according to a Caltrans news release.
Motorists traveling between the south shore of Lake Tahoe and the north or west shore will have to use Highway 50 and Highway 28.
The National Weather Service forecasts new snowfall over the Echo and Donner passes from three storms between Wednesday and Monday.

I am glad to read your assesment of ‘09 as I was just a few miles north of you on Valentine weekend that winter and know what it was like that week. As I remember, the road through Emerald Bay was closed that month as well but possibly due to construction. This gives me a good comparison.
I found it a photographer’s paradise.

Awesome snowfall records in the Sierras. 73.66 feet in one season, 1906-07.
It's just not anthropogenic global climate change. Idiot liberals. Suckers to their own scams.
You want fries or tots with that order?
I’m hungry...
There is a big slide zone on the south side of Emerald Bay. Many years, although not the past few years, they would just close 89 on the west shore for the duration of the winter. Even if they could clear the road, they were afraid of slides taking out cars. There hasn’t been enough snow for a few years to worry. This year they may end up keeping it closed for a while again. It’s nice to see some snow again!
Ping
If they do, they better have barbecue sauce!
My place in Nevada was at 2X December average precipitation at mid month. I’m stoked for spring, but my road is probably going to be crap...
[ That’s right, the lady said 30 feet. ]
Man, that Global Warming! That is one Inconvenient Snow Bank.
Have you been crawling around under my truck?
“....they will just shoot it off into the water below.”
Probably not after the Lake Tahoe agreement. Enviros would go nuts.
Sorry but there is no way the Donner Party could of made it from where they were camped to relative safety to the West - simply no way. I have made the trip they would of made on horse back and it took two full days to get to Blue Canyon. No wagons, no one on foot and in the Summer.
We moved to SLT after college graduation from SDSU in the late 70s. Only stayed 6 months but it was a lot of fun. And it’s truly God’s Country.
Very heavy wet snow can have a ratio of 3:1. That is a lot of water.
LOL. That was hilarious. Never heard that one before.
An atmospheric river is bad enough, but worse when it’s frozen!
A bit gamey, don’t you think?
I’ve driven through there a couple of times in the summer—can’t imagine it with 20-30 feet of snow. But, to your point, the Donners were the only group that didn’t make it—everyone else that year made it in. The part I didn’t realize until I saw the documentary is that the people in California were aware that the Donners hadn’t made it and sent rescue parties—four I think—to rescue them. The Mexican War diverted men to attempt the rescues.
This has to be FAKE NEWS, We all know that because of Man Made Global Warming this type of event is impossible, just ask Jerry Brown, Al Gore, or Leonardo DiCaprio.
Must have been a Studio Production.
