Shoot, if I had any, I’d be more inclined to use to to buy food and/or clothing for strangers rather than sending it into the informercial pimps.

I do think it’s best to go through local community help groups though. Direct giving tends to enable folks to do an end run on agencies that seek to get the homeless into programs where they can help themselves.
They want them to clean up their act, become responsible, and obtain employment.
Many folks don’t want to comply with those requirements.
