The New Year brought new challenges to Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump bore down in a series of pre-inauguration critiques targeting the nation's staple automotive manufacturing sector.
The Mexican peso has declined more than 10 percent since Trump's surprise election victory in November and foreign investors are wary of taking action given the president-elect's threats on higher tariffs and stiffer taxes for cars made for the U.S. market. Elsewhere, the Mexican president has faced domestic unrest after retail fuel prices skyrocketed following a deregulation effort that rang in 2017.
An economic survey from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development finds the external headwinds for the Mexican economy are strong.
"Against this highly complicated global backdrop, Mexico has had to face various headwinds such as collapsing oil prices, a restrictive monetary policy in the United States, and a sharp depreciation of the peso," OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria said in an address from Mexico City.
The OECD finds widespread economic disparities in Mexico, from varying production centers in the north and south to other inequalities, including a lack of opportunities for women.

Once again, lying media.
I suspect that the Drug and People running businesses along with gov’t corruption are doing fine.
Wow! Who owns UPI now?
(Thought they died a couple of times.)
Mexico was always a failed state. Take a look at the history of that country and its governments.
Spaniards screwed up everything they touched.
Mexico is the country that tried to interfere with our election.
They will pay a price for it.
Good, they need to have their revolution.
Imagine a country so weak, fragile and disorganized that the words of the President-elect, before he even enters power, can knock it to its knees.
That’s what socialism does to you.
BS....Mexico, Vincente Fox a main reason it is the way it is. Corrupt. How many Mexicans died on his watch? Heads cut off and hug from bridges and street signs.
Do you know how much oil the country has? I thought they had a massive amount? How much oil money goes into corrupt peoples pocket? Drug cartel pocket?
Hey Mexico, just wait till we send back millions of your citizens
Cry me a river.
I had a full heart although they broke our laws. They treat Americans terrible.
Cry me a river.
If Trump sends the illegals back, it could cause social revolution in Mexico. The Mexican elite use the USA as a safety valve to send millions of their unemployables up here so they don’t foment troubles down there.
Just wait until Trump cracks down on the money immigrants (both legal and otherwise) are sending back to Mexico.
Mexico is potentially a very rich country.
They have a lot of natural resources, loads of coastlines for tourism, food, culture, history .... literal and figurative gold mines.
But their governments have been corrupt for a long time (I understand this is relative) so the wealth of the country never gets to the ordinary citizen. Which is why they leave, and I don’t blame them for that, I blame the government.
Trump or someone needs to read Mexico’s elite the riot act and explain to them that they must clean up their corruption and treat their citizens better ... or else.
I loath the UN but as long as they exist the UN should be called in to create refugee camps on the Mexican side of the border for all the economic refuges MEXICO HAS CREATED. Put sanctions on Mexico until they clean up their corruption and treat their own citizens fairly.
I can’t argue with that. Is there a former Spanish colony that is not screwed up?
I think that they should double down by calling all Americans racist, that they are going to reclaim California, that if we try to deport illegals, etc.
Mexico will soon be invaded by Mexicans..?
Spain is beautiful, but their former colonies are all screwed up. I agree with you.
